Painted the Wheels

to complete my Storm Trooper look I decided to paint the wheels black with Plasti Dip
Nice thing about the plasti dip is the minimal prep needed (other than cleaning) since over spray can be wiped off

was able to do it with only one run, which I was able to take care off by soaking a blue towel in Naphtha and dabbing the run to thin it down, then hit it with another coat.
the only other issue I had was when I remove the plastic bag from the brakes, one edge stuck to the wheel and pulled some up, using a similar technique I cleaned up the edge and spot coated it.

going to let the paint harden in the garage for the next week and then put some ceramic coat on it.

Looks pretty good, nice job. Great thing about pd is if you ever decide you don't like it... Peels right off. So many people think you ruin something be it wheels or part of the car by using the stuff, but I've had a part on my other car dipped for 6yrs now no issues.

Curious how ceramic coating will react/hold up. Keep us updated.

Did this to my Cay wheels, it didn't peel off too easily. Had the wheels powdercoated. the porous finish of the Plasti Dip traps brake dust, wheels had a brown tint to them due to the dust. I don't recommend at all.

that's why I'm going to try putting a ceramic coating on them. it should help repel the brake dust and make cleaning easier
I have used the ceramic coat on the window trim I painted, seems to help.

Nice work! It definitely helps complete the look :)

Deezflip 05-13-2019 07:47 AM

Looks good!

I was told roughly 1 can per wheel, Plasti Dip peels easier with thicker coats. You can also add a layer of Plasti Dip Glossifier to add gloss and adds that extra layer to help when it's time to remove it.

DogWood 05-13-2019 08:58 AM

Thanks Guys, Deezflip I had heard the same thing and pretty much used 1 can per wheel, it on nice and thick.
was able to peal it off the emblems fairly easily once I got it startted.

LGARCIA 05-13-2019 01:28 PM

Looking good, nice change!

cerbomark 05-13-2019 03:14 PM

surprise that ceramic will work on that rough of a surface .

DogWood 05-13-2019 03:27 PM

the wheels will be the real test of it, shall be interesting if nothing else.

Deezflip 05-14-2019 08:32 AM

I've never really liked black wheels until I bought this Panamera. Always thought it gave it that spare-tire look. After seeing it more in person with these cars and other specialized cars...it looks really nice, Porsches, Lambo, Ferrari, Etc. It makes these cars look more aggressive, sportier, where other cars can make it look cheap and empty....just IMHO

jtorrebl 05-14-2019 01:35 PM

Why don’t you just powder coat the wheels for $800 through the dealer. You have an option of higher gloss or semi gloss. Looks a lot better on such a nice car. If it’s a lease, dealers prefer the powder coated wheels as they’re easier to re sell.
You did a very good job but in person Plastidip usually looks cheap overall.

Spray glossy clear coat over Plasti Dip? actually I am spraying glossy clear coat over my 20" turbo2 rims now for easy clean up.

put 2 coats of ceramic on the wheels, gave them a nice glossy look, second coat went on smoother than the first.....

we'll see how it works.

very nice !!! need a little more glossy ... LOL ...

DogWood 05-19-2019 10:28 AM

there is probably about half of the coating left in the bottle - I think if it stops raining I might try putting a few more coats on.

LouDA 05-19-2019 10:32 AM

Nice job 😊

DogWood 05-25-2019 02:53 PM

So far so good, I have driven it a few times and although it has rained a bit the wheels clean up nice and easily

dougcayenne 05-25-2019 04:43 PM

The weather is so nice today in the bay area. I am cleaning all the 20" turbo2 rim and spray the Dupli-Color Clear gloss Wheel Coating ... I will post the pictures after i am done ...

DogWood 05-27-2019 01:09 PM

internet picture wise they look good, besides you're supposed to be going too fast for anyone to get a good look anyway :)

dougcayenne 05-27-2019 01:40 PM

Thank you, DogWood. LOL ... There are many imperfect spots due to curb rash sanding. In order to get away, I may have to do plasti dip just like yours. We see ...

dougcayenne 06-01-2019 01:29 AM

I have some imperfect spots on the spoke - machine surface area. Don't know how to fix it. Finally, I found the video in youtube to show how fix the machine surface area. Check it out for your reference in
the future.

nice find, thanks for sharing Doug

DogWood 07-28-2019 09:06 PM

Cleaned the wheels for the first time since painting them, just used a wet towel, the cleaned up fairly easily
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.6sp...c4f46d4ff1.jpg

I also decided to paint the chrome ring around my Chrono,

[QUOTE=DogWood;4793137]Cleaned the wheels for the first time since painting them, just used a wet towel, the cleaned up fairly easily

I also decided to paint the chrome ring around my Chrono,

ring around Chrono looks great. i have searched for months to find a hood for it to block it from reflecting on the windshield but haven't found one for panamera fitment. many other models have them but nothing for pani that i have found. i assume you had to pull it out to paint, was that much of a process?

DogWood 08-01-2019 09:01 AM

mine was already rather loose(so loose in fact, that it popped off when I hit a parking lot entrance rather fast), there are 3 clips in the ring holding it in place at 2 O'clock, 6, and 10
I now have the problem of it not staying on - looks like I'll need to put some glue on it.

Very nice, is your car wrapped?

turbo_mikePTT 08-15-2019 08:16 PM

Yes I just had it wrapped matte blue metallic. I got a deal at only $1400. My bro paid a lot more for his M4 in SoCal.

My brother goes to premium auto styling he got a M4 and a Range Rover skme there both excellent jobs. Mine isn’t perfect but I’m on a budget and for $1400 it’s hard to pass up
