Clutch Upgrade Dilemma- Some Help From You LWFW People

Well, I am taking my TT to the next level and the clutch is going to be a liabilty. I am having turbos made now with ecm and headers that will take me to 6oohp crank. I am considering the LWFW option from Kevin or the Stage 3 Dual Mass kit from Stephen. This car is driven 8k a year and tracked about 12 days. For all you LWFW people, what is your opinion on the setup? How is drivabilty? Noise? Clutch takeup and engagement? Is the main issues stalling due to the light FW or aggressive clutch disc bite? I know the upgraded dual mass kit is not ideal, but I do not want to make a 3K$ mistake with a LWFW that I or my better half(wife) will despise. Anyone have an upgraded dual mass setup with this hp level. Anyone in the metro Detroit area that has this setup? Thanks for the input? Kevin

Go LWFW...I really notice almost no difference in "driveability". You will get used to it quickly. There is the slight noise (which goes away if you engage the clutch), but it does not bother me (and I'm in a cab). Enagagement is nice and more importantly it can handle the HP. I don't stall it at all!

I have Kevin's LWFW/Clutch setup (from a GT3 RS), and really like it. Saved me 27 bs, engagement is great, chatter is minimal (but all LWFW's produce some chatter), and it handles my 710+ ft lbs of torque great thus far.

It will take a little bit of getting used to though. You'll stall it a few times at first.

The LWF will improve acelleration/throttle response and the upgraded clutch will provide ample clamp force. So if you want the performance - go for it. However, I just did the same package you are considering and with 55,000 miles on the original clutch, it is handling the power just fine...so far. I THINK I will get several thousand additional miles out of it, before it needs replacing.

John, I am looking for civility and driveability out of my clutch... I can get the performance easier with other upgrades. Thanks, Kevin

KPG,

Kevin says you are getting larger turbos than I have and will need a stronger clutch. I thought you were getting the k16/24 (same as I have) and was relaying my experience. I have no experience with the larger turbos, so I would defer to your tuner.

If you are looking to be able to throw your wife the keys and not worry about her stalling it then forget the L/W setup. Roxanne tried to drive mine, once. She will not drive it at all now. That was just to the store 2 minites from here. So keep that in mond. If you are the only driver that is different.

Markski,

That is the clutch Speed Gallery recommended to me. They were talking about using the OEM dual mass flywheel with it. Does it use a dual mass or LW flywheel in OEM configuration?

This Thread Is Over !!!!

THIS THREAD IS OFFICIALLY OVER !!! I drove Kevin's LWFW setup today and do not understand the hype concerning this issue. There is a LWFW disinformation campaign ongoing!!! I want to give a public thanks to Bill, aka wross996TT, who took time out of his day and allowed me to try out his LWFW. I was in Denver for the day and Kevin @ Ultimate initiated this meeting and Bill was gracious enough to accept... Bill is a stand up guy! I am sure you all know that Bill's car is a Turbo Cab, and a stunning example at that! Any noise issues would be much more noticable in his car as opposed to my coupe. With the car running, clutch out at idle I could barely notice the noise while I was on my knees with my head near the rocker panels. Clearly there was some gear chatter but not enough to stand out from the other ambient engine noises. Now when the AC compressor kicked on, the noise was clearly louder and more noticable. The noise with the AC was significant but not a deal breaker. I hopped in the pass seat and Bill took us out on some city roads. I was watching his clutch action and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. He pulled over and allowed me to drive back to his house. I pulled out on the street and the first thing that crossed my mind was ... Why am I here ? This is a non issue. Sound issues aside, If I did not know better I would have assumed this was a stock clutch. I had 6 or 7 stop signs and never came close to stalling. It was that smooth. I have had a lot of feedback, pro and con, from fellow members and I cannot believe we are talking about the same setup. I am going to make a prediction... When this clutch goes in I am not going to tell my wife , and I do not think she will notice... as long as the AC is not on! My LWFW is on its way and will be in next week. I will update the wife's reaction to my "clutch adjustment" Thanks to all who shared their thoughts. Thanks again to Kevin for putting up with crazy phone calls concerning this setup and facilitating this test drive. Thanks again, Bill... great car! Finally this is over. Kevin G
