In 2002 the 996 Carreras underwent significant improvements over the 1999-2001 996. The changes from Mk. I to Mk. II include new front fenders, different bumpers, body-color rear bumper guards, and oval tailpipes were added along with Turbo-style headlights to differentiate the 996 from the Boxster. The changes were more than cosmetic, however, yielding a 15 percent flow increase through the radiators and reducing lift by 25 percent up front and 40 percent in the rear. Stiffer door sill, seat pan, and roof areas resulted in a stronger body structure that improves handling, ride quality, and safety. The coupe structure was stiffened by 25%. Displacement of the engine was increased by .2 liters and horsepower moved from 300 to 320bhp. Overall performance was enhanced by VarioCam Plus, providing continuously variable a valve lift and timing on both intake and exhaust. The Carrera also got useful cup holders and a glovebox. The central air vent was increased in size by 20 percent while the multi-function display in the bottom of the tach got bigger and offered a multifunction on board computer. The digital speedometer was moved from the bottom of the tach into the analog speedo.
