Catless and tune in California question

Catless and tune in California question
Hi guys
im thinking about a simple tune on a stock car with a catless muffler. So that means every other year id have to put the stock muffler back on the car and remove the tune to pass a smog inspection.
Is having a catless muffler and a simple tune worth the trouble? Or maybe I should tune the car with a stock muffler?
i know cobb has the hand held device for adding and removing tunes snd im wondering if other tuners have a similar device that i can own/keep.
thank you.

swapping the cats in/out is well worth it in terms of on tap power differences definitely. what is almost NOT worth it is the hassle of re-setting the readiness monitors for the smog stuff. while there are more ways than one to skin the cat issues, it's no less a PITA. is it "worth it". well, i just went thru it and mine are still "in'. in spite of the discernible loss of power, I'm in no hurry to remove them. ( only for tracking of course lol ).
as to a tune, it's not gonna matter re the ecu what tune you run with or without an aftermarket exhaust. just get the tune you want and the exhaust you wan't. you won;t need a remap to maximize the benefit of another exhaust.
re tune? me, i'd go with sambo ( here ) at by design auto for the cobb setup or kevin at umw in WA state. they both can provide handhelds and multiple files etc. i would not go anywhere else.

I swap back my old exhaust and stock tune. I cruise around for a while to reset everything. Stock tune runs fine with upgraded injectors as long as I go slow. Pass smog and swap back. Really only an hour of work at most with air tools.

upon reflection, youre right of course. what should've been as easy as merely swapping back in the cats turned into a 600+ mile nightmare, but only because i wasn't able ( this time ) to easily get my monitors back to ready. that's still fresh in my mind.
but the difference running cats vs none is dramatic and probably worth "it".

What about running without the most effective smog reducing piece of equipment on your car? Don't care? We're you ever on LA in the summer in the early 70s? I think you should go to jail for running catless in So Cal. But I'm from Nor Cal, what do we know.

exactly. an admonition from someone that willingly drives a car that gets about 10mpg LOL.. somewhat off topic, but did you know?
that the vast majority of CA nuts fruits and flakes the once great state is known for emanate primarily from NorCal?
a rhetorical question, no doubt. just buy some more "carbon credits!"

I used to live in the valley east of Los Angeles and I remember even in the early 90's how bad the air was. Your lungs would hurt (we called it smog log) and the news would inform you to not go outside. The emissions equipment is great, but a few racing cars owned by a handful of enthusiasts with no cats is nothing to put people in jail for and is not going to cause major damage.

You guys honestly don't care about emissions at all? If I was part of the fun police I certainly wouldn't be driving a modded 996tt. Cats are a really small price to pay for 10x reduction in pollution. Besides they keep your bumper clean. I guess it also comes down to how you use your car. I put on alot of miles so i try to do my part. Weekend cars not so much of an issue.

personally i believe that the concept of "global warming" is a hoax perpetrated and supported by scientific studies that are bought and paid for by the interests that are best served by the "hoax" being insinuated into policy that determines how we are collectively, allowed to live our lives.
so, while i am not asking you to believe as i do, i do take it you have not been fined for lighting your fireplace in NorCal?

so, given you believe that those of "us" that *might* ever run our cars catless ( racetrack anyone? ) should be JAILED ( your words ) does this mean then you would also call the authorities on your neighbor for having a fireplace burning on xmas morning?
i guess it does. but i am comforted to note that your "restrictions" on "us" might be limited to weekdays! so i imagine you'd make a terrific ruler of us all, who would be known far and wide for your empathy and largesse..
so, how do YOU spell hypocrite?

I guess I'm the anti vaccer of emissions. Everyone should have it but not me. . Nah I wouldn't do it to my other cars, 2 pickups. It smells and is loud and mostly undesireable. But for my Porsche that I don't drive as much I like it for max performance. If I daily drove it I would put cats on it mainly because of the boat exhaust smell.

I'm not sure about global warming but I think in 20 years almost everyone will have electric cars or at least hybrids because they are just nice to drive. The technology is rapidly improving and everyone will want one.

as i understand the regs, you can run any cats that allow the car to pass emissions testing. get caught with your cats off and be prepared for a hefty fine.
i too well remember when you looked outside in la to see what the air you were gonna breathe looked like that day.. and am all for vehicles that produce fewer noxious fumes. that said, i'm not a fan at all of of "our" (?!) govt'. sticking a flashlight up our collective tailpipes and that's what it's come to. both literally, as well as metaphorically.
decatted cars should probably not be run on the street, but i wouldn't be the guy to tell someone NOT to, or to rat them out for doing so.
