Got a 991.2 S, switched from a 997.2 4S -- first impressions

Hi folks,

Got a 2017 991.2 S and I love it. I switched from a 997.2 4S and the 2 cars are very different. Here are my first impressions:

Performance: I loved the naturally aspirated 997.2 4S engine and with the sport exhaust it sounded very raw. The 991.2 engine is getting used to, to be honest. The added torque in the lower RPM range is nice, but the turbo's wheezing and whining is just annoying. This is my 1st turbo engine, FYI. I can definitely tell there is a lag, even though Porsche claims it's minimal. BUT, the overall power is AWESOME! When I put the pedal down hard, it just explodes forward and it sounds amazing in Sport mode with the Sport exhaust.

Handling: I tracked my previous car a couple of times and the AWD was nice and made me feel safe/in control. The new-to-me 2WD is a little scary to be honest. I did a canyon drive, got on the gas hard and it felt like a completely different experience. The steering feels a lot lighter, but maybe that's the electronic steering? It needs less input, maybe -- can't quite put my finger on it yet. I'll get used to it, but I feel I have to be a bit more careful not to lose the rear. I'm taking it to the track soon for sure!

Interior: LOVE it. It's definitely a huge upgrade from the new PCM to the red-leather seats to the overall feel/quality. Apple Carplay will soon have Waze and Google Maps, so I'm very excited about that. The cabin just feels high-end and very comfortable.

Exterior: I loved my 997.2 and I really the dig the new design as well. My only gripe is the turbo exhausts and red reflector strips on the rear feel like it clutters the design.

Beautiful car, thanks for sharing. I also made the jump from a 997.2 C4S to a 991 C2S ( but a 991.1). Love many of the same things you mentioned. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the 997.2 but my wife definitely prefers this one!

perhaps due to 4 wheel steering? needs less input.

Nice review. Glad you are enjoying it. Yours has RWS and PTV like mine, I'm surprised by this:

" I'll get used to it, but I feel I have to be a bit more careful not to lose the rear"

I never feel this way, I've owned eight Porsches and have thousand of miles on others (all 911s). There is even a drift mode that is awesome and always feel in control and that nannies will save me.

Well, I think I worded it wrong. Now I've been driving the new car for about a week, I get the sense when I turn hard through a corner, the rear kinda slides/settles after I turned in and when I get on the gas, it grips and I feel in control. But a split second before that, the car seems to be wanna settle all the rear-weight first. That sensation I didn't have with my 4S. Also, the steering is MUCH lighter on this one, as oppose to heavy AWD steeering I had on the 4S. I prefer the lighter steering, but it takes getting used to.

The other thing I need to get used to is now there is all the low rpm torque, where as with my 997.2 4S most the power was 4500 and up. So, I'm not sure how to drive the new car/turbo-engine quite yet. I tried keeping the rpm high through the corners, but I get the feeling maybe I don't need to that. Do I? Seems like I can pull out of a corner doing 3000 rpm just fine and then get on the gas from there. I still don't like the new wheezing & whistling turbo sound vs the NA sound, but whatever... it is what it is.

I'm taking the car to a Speedventures event Sept 22nd at Buttonwillow. I LOVE that track and I can't wait.

Yeah I get now what you are saying...hey turn ins are now amazing! The rotation is amazing and you might be feeling a little of that too. Let me know how the track goes. Have you ever had a RWD 911? I never liked the steering feel in a 991.1 C4S, too much play. I had a RWD 997, the 997 C4S is one I never got a chance to drive a lot.
I went on a 450 miles NC mountain run this past weekend and I did wonder what mine would feel like with little more resistance in the steering. Then we lit up the corners and I forgot about it . I've grown to like the occasional wind up sound of turbos, I know it means I have explosive torque waiting to use. Space ship launch LOL.
If I did have to sell my 991.2 I would go back to 997.2 if possible. I never really wanted a 991.1 of my own. I had a buddy that got a new one every year and we traveled a lot, they never grew on me.

You can simply paint the rear reflectors body color tp make them disappear. Congrats on a beautiful spec, enjoy it!

I could do that, good suggestion.

Looking at what the 992 potentially might look like, I think they are trying to solve that design issue with the new 992: reflectors, exhaust, turbo-exhaust, parking-sensors, etc are now all lumped together in one black chunk across the bottom rear. We'll see what the final product will look like.

Beautiful car, love the interior - one of my all-time favorites. Great perspective as well on the 997. Been thinking about adding one to round out the fleet. DO NOT like the new 991 design so thinking about going older vs. newer in the future.
