My DB9 has XPEL on hood and door edges. Does this need to be removed/repaired before ceramic coating?

 

No you do NOT take anything off. Ceramic/Quartz/Glass coatings are intended to go on top of the film. ANY paint protection film. And also on top of clear coats. Including the wheels. The coatings will help the film last longer and keep its properties alive for a longer time. Film companies usually warranty their films for up to 10 years. However, gloss levels, self-healing capabilities etc.... will diminish. Films will cloud up due to road contamination the same as your clear coat will. A coating will help prevent that and take the abuse itself.

NOT all coatings are the same. Coatings use organic and inorganic properties and then variants of Silica Dioxide in powder or liquid. How the coatings are developed and manufactured will play a huge part in how they look and react to weather conditions. For instance a coating I use one of them gives predominantly a candy like glass coating over the paint. Another gives a carnauba wax type deep hue to the paint. Combine them in two coats and its a mixture of both of them.

Obviously have not tried XPEL's Coating. However, personally I prefer to stay in the small japanese manufacturers where the chemist actively takes part in all aspects. In the two cases of what I use (they are the best on the market at this time) the chemist is actually the owner. So they must stand by thier products completely.

The two pictures below, show NON filmed clear coat paints that over a 2-3 year period collected a stain type film on the top layer of clear coat. Polishing removes that and you can clearly see the 50/50 line.

Awesome, thanks for choosing XPEL for your DB9. To answer your question, if the film is damaged and you want to get new film before you essentially seal it in with a Ceramic Coating then yes you would want to have the older film removed, have new film installed and then have the coating applied. If the film is in good shape then no need to remove before ceramic coating.
