Dension IceLink Install (MOST Porsche)
Dension IceLink Install (MOST Porsche)
I've almost completed the install of the Dension IceLink in my 2003 Boxster. For those that aren't aware of the situation Porsche, in their infinite wisdom, implemented audio systems in all P-Cars from 2003 (or so) onwards that have no support whatsoever for aux input other than FM Modulators. After waiting for years Dension have finally released their IceLink iPod / Aux in adaptor.
The install isn't trivial but is quite managable at home without any technical skills, I've tried to document the process as best I can, the PDF can be found here Boxster Hacks and should be applicable to some degree to all P-Cars with fiber based audio (CDR23, CDR24, PCM, PCM2 etc).
To complete things I've been fiddling with installing the ipod and bracket, these pics aren't in the document yet so I'll stick them in here with a couple form the PDF.
NB - I have no affiliation with Dension.

I got mine from Eric at bumperplugs.com - board sponsor.
I think it works with the shuffle too.
Edit - here's a link http://www.bumperplugs.com/DensionStandard.html

<LI class=style5>Which iPod models will function with this unit? <LI class=style5>All but the Shuffle, each must have standard access port on bottom of iPod
CRAP!!! Still hosed.
So when will the IT gurus make an adapter for the shuffle I wonder?
Basic headphone-type jack on one and the put an access port on the other.

The dension also has a regular AUX in but the quality will not be as good. If you're going to spend $500 on this thing then a few dollars more for a decent ipod or a USB drive isn't going to make a big difference.
Do you have PCM or CDR2X?
Do you have PCM or CDR2X?
More questions for you.
I see the picture of the unit from the link you provided, thanks.
I see a power input, fibre optic input, AUX input.
I undertand the expansion port and video output.
What is the USB input for?
My shuffle uses a USB connection to the computer and a male pin to the shuffle itself to exchange info and charge. Is the USB on the Denison an input and if so, for what?

My car is a 2003 model if that matters for your question.
No NAV. Sorry, just got what you were asking.

The USB on the Dension allows you to play music from a memory stick or a USB hard drive. The problem though (I think) is that you'll have a CDR23 (like me) which offers very limited navigation.
With an iPod shuffle how do you select tracks? Do you just do it blind and skip back and forth? If that's the case I think you'd get the same capabilities with a USB storage device connected to a Dension.
You could also run the 3.5mm jack to the RCA input on the Dension and play it that way.
Chris.
