What's the difference between N0 & N1 & N2 & N3??

What's the difference between the different "N" ratings and is it okay to mix them? I mean the speed and weight ratings are the same. So what does the N stand for and the numbers?

N0 is first generation, N3 is latest generation

My understanding is that when Porsche signs an agreement with a tire manuf to supply tires for a particular model, they approve them as oem equipment with the N designation. And like stated above, subsuquent generations get approved as 1, 2 , 3.
