Yellow, not mellow

This is the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4. And like the original Cayman GT4, it is very much the thinking Porsche fan's answer to any special edition 911. The mid-engine platform, manual transmission, a host of weight-saving features and very striking styling.

Lower but no less balanced to view

The 718 Cayman GT4's side-profile shows its near-perfect mid-engine proportions. The silhouette has excellent balance and in the pursuit of outstanding driving dynamics, it rides 1.1-inches lower than any other 718 model.

Latest lighting tech

The front view shows Porsche's latest quad-LED headlamps. There is also a custom front splitter, which is part of the Cayman 718 GT4's hugely involved aerodynamic upgrades.

The stance of a true driver's car

From the rear, there are clues that show this is a classic road racer. The fixed rear wing, those large exhaust pipes, and the presence of a very real, active diffusor all forewarn that this special edition Porsche has true driving dynamics to offer.

A big flat-six needs proper breathing space

The 718 Cayman GT4's rear diffusor is an absolute work of aerodynamic art. It also houses those large exhaust pipes, which signal something that should make Porsche traditionalists very happy: the presence of big-capacity flat-six in the middle of this Cayman.

No turbochargers on this yellow submarine

The top-down drone view of Porsche's new 718 Cayman GT4 shows off that rear strut brace that sits above the engine. And what an engine it is. Naturally-aspirated and displacing a healthy 4 liters, it makes a delightfully linear 414hp, at 7600rpm.

Big wing to keep the rear planted

Performance is storming for a 718-series car. Top speed registers at 188mph. To ensure the 718 Cayman GT4 is stable at the impressive velocities it is capable of, Porsche's engineers chose to mount a fixed-wing on the rear of the car. It is a big bit of aero that guarantees solid downforce at speed.

Gripper rubber to keep it zoned-in on that apex

To exploit the 718 Cayman GT4's mid-engine balance, Porsche has ensured excellent cornering grip. To achieve this, the GT4 rolls on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and features Porsche's latest torque-vectoring software. The rear axle is also aided by a mechanical limited-slip differential.

There is only one transmission - and you have to shift it yourself

There is no PDK transmission option. It is a six-speed stick-shift, and that is it. To help those who struggle to slickly downshift a manual transmission into tricky corners at speed, Porsche engineers have added a rev-matching function, which pre-blips the throttle, to help you synchronize things a bit better.

Exposed in-car tubing and extreme lightweight seat design

The body-color matching seatbelt retainers are a styling novelty, but just look at the structure between the headrest and seatback! In an attempt to achieve the best possible torsional vehicle stiffness, is a roll-hoop structure behind the seats.
