Tesla Killer?

Tesla has long held the crown in the EV world, but other automakers are beginning to catch up. That includes Porsche, which has made a proper Tesla Model S rival in its new Taycan. Recently, Parker Nirenstein of the YouTube channel Vehicle Virgins got his hands on a Taycan, and soon afterward, declared it a "Tesla killer." But he also made this video pointing out five crazy features of the electric sedan that blew him away, which are certainly worth going over.

Insane Acceleration

As Nirenstein points out right off the bat, most electric cars are known for their acceleration off the line thanks to their instant torque. The Taycan Turbo S, however, takes things to the next level with a 2.6 second 0-60 time, according to Porsche. Nirenstein believes that it's closer to 2.3 seconds, however. "The initial hit of acceleration in this car is like nothing else," he says. "It's unbelievable."

Innovative Powertrain

That performance comes from the Taycan's innovative powertrain, which consists of a 93.4 kW hour battery that runs at 800 volts instead of the standard 400. Porsche claims this is better for charging efficiency, and it's also lighter. There are two motors on the front axle and one on the back, as well as a two-speed transmission, which is not something you typically see in electric cars, but it gives the Taycan an advantage in acceleration.

Sound

Nirenstein also comes away impressed by the interesting sound that the Taycan makes. "It makes this futuristic, almost alien sound that is so dang cool," he says. "When you accelerate, it makes you feel like you're in a UFO." As Nirenstein notes, it isn't a replacement for the GT3's screaming flat-six, but it's better than nothing, anyway.

Exterior Design

Nirenstein doesn't hold back when it comes to his affection for the Taycan's exterior design, calling it "the best looking sedan" Porsche has ever made. Of course, it isn't like Porsche has made a lot of sedans over its history, but we agree that the Taycan looks better than the Panamera and is a sharp-looking machine, at least.

Brake Regeneration

Nirenstein also waxes poetic about the stopping power of the Turbo S's carbon-ceramic brakes but came away particularly impressed with the car's braking regeneration capabilities. Porsche has tweaked the technology so that 90 percent of the energy lost in braking due to heat dissipation and other drivetrain losses are recouped back into the battery, an impressive statistic indeed.

Sum of Its Parts

Add it all together, and you've got a vehicle that's done nothing but impresses everyone who's been behind the wheel of it. While we'll always be suckers for a good internal combustion engine, it's hard not to like the Taycan and its incredible performance, good looks, and impressive technology.
