Here’s what was actually said

In an interview with CAR magazine, Bugatti’s president, Stephan Winkelmann, was asked if he thought there was a market for expensive, larger, luxury vehicles. He admitted while there is, most customers want to sit higher so that they can see the road a bit better. He then went on to suggest that a new model the company is working on will likely be a four-seater with the ability for off-road driving. Pressed for more details, Winkelmann said that it won’t be a traditional SUV but rather, a higher riding, crossover-influenced sports car. But what about the price?

Winkelmann suggested this new type of car (new for Bugatti, at least) would probably come with a price tag of approximately $1 million. He said that it’ll be the best performing and most expensive model in its sector, but not Bugatti’s most expensive vehicle. That will still be (and always will be) the Chiron. And for those unfamiliar, right now this particular model can be yours for just $19 million.

Back to the Bugatti SUV (but not really SUV)

With its reputation full intact, the obvious question here is – why? Well, for one there appears to be a growing market for this type of car. Secondly, Bugatti’s competitors have already entered this market, and to much fanfare. Take, for instance, Lamborghini, with its Urus model. While this two-door model is (only) $200,000, it has a fantastically powerful V8 engine that can turn out 641hp and go from 0 to 62mph in just 3.2 seconds. In all likelihood, Bugatti will use much of the same componentry as the Urus, but the opportunity is there to make their particular model lighter. This, in turn, could result in one of the best performing cross-over SUVs (but not really SUV) on the market).

Rumor has it the wheels are already turning

Taken straight from the rumor mill, Automobile recently published a report stating research has already been completed and it was determined the development of a Bugatti SUV is very much possible, and that the company is looking into borrowing the EV technology from Rimac, the Croatian performance EV brand. The Automobile report goes on to detail that Bugatti reached out to Rimac through its connection with Porsche. Unnamed sources stated that Rimac already agreed to sell its 1,850-horsepower (1,379-kilowatt) C two rolling chassis to Bugatti. With this deal in place, Bugatti plans to sell approximately 600 crossovers in the near future.

I have $1 million to burn and I want this car – when can I get it?

Not any time soon, unfortunately. The company is going to have to change some things around and ramp up production at its manufacturing facility in order to actually build this car. That’s because, at present, the factory is slated to produce just 800 units in 2023. But if they figure that out, they’ll be introduced to a whole new market.
