A Cayman that wants to jump

Porsche's mid-engined Cayman is revered as one of the best-balanced sportscars you can buy. You don't see many of them running with a roof-scoop. Or a red recovery lasso protruding from the front bumper. Those clues should tell you all you need to know about this rather special Cayman GT4 Clubsport...

The oversteer is here

Add some special stage rally lights to the hood and the secret is out: this is Porsche's fantastic Cayman GT4 Clubsport Rally. Due to compete in select rally events for the 2020 season, it returns Porsche to the realm of timed special stages and high-performance driving on slippery road surfaces and terrain with jumps.

Additional bits underneath

Rally stages, even the tarmac events, are a lot rougher than racing circuits. To armor the Cayman for the terrain it will race on, there is additional underbody protection. This is especially important for those occasions when the car might bottom-out at full suspension compression, after landing a high-speed jump.

Every pound saved, counts

The Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a great platform for Porsche's rallying ambitions. It already features weight reduction features, such as fabric-pulls instead of traditional door-handle mechanisms. For the rally car, Porsche engineers have gone a touch further, but replacing the entire door panel with carbon, instead of fabric or leather.

No red needle tach

Although Porsche's road cars always feature an analog rev-counter, that does not apply to its competition cars. Here, efficiency is everything and a fully digital instrumentation binnacle is present. On start-up, the Cayman rally car does give its driver a brief reminder of where it comes from.

Sideways fun never hurt anyone

Rallying might be dominated by all-wheel-drive cars, but in certain events, rear-wheel drive can still be competitive. On the tarmac rallies, the mid-engined balance and rear-wheel drive agility of a Cayman does come into its own. For Porsche, it is also an opportunity to showcase how adaptable its production sportscars are - effortlessly converting to competition cars.

Flat-six music

Perhaps the most charming feature of this Porsche Cayman GT4 Rally is its engine. In a world where most sportscars are now turbocharged, Porsche has kept it all-natural. The GT4 Rallye is powered by Porsche's outstanding 3.8-liter flat-six, which runs a very healthy 425hp tune in this rally car concept. The horizontally-opposed cylinder layout also helps to reduce the GT4's center of gravity, making it more stable when jumping.
