EV8

By hopping up a Prius to 3.4 liters an introducing a V8 hybrid platform to one of the most recognizable racing series on the planet, Toyota is making an interesting statement. Essentially, this car shows that a Prius can be a high performance platform that looks cool and goes like hell. This is an important marketing tool for a few reasons….

Electric Performance is Growing

VW just smashed the Pikes Peak record with a fully electric vehicle, and Porsche has been laying waste to lap times with the 919 EVO (a hybrid). Technologically speaking, the EVs are coming and they are taking over due to a new amp in performance capabilities. With the cultural shift towards thinking these cars are fast, Toyota is positioning themselves in a good place with this Prius race car.

It Makes People Care

No one cares about a Prius. When is the last time anyone ever heard of one of these cars get mentioned at a meet without the inevitable chuckle a few seconds after. They’re not taken seriously in the enthusiast community because they have always represented the antithesis of what a sports car is. The GT300 race car shakes up what could happen to the DNA of this car in the future. Perhaps a performance model will be offered to take on the likes of Tesla. This gets people to care about the brand.

Shocking Looks

If they made them look like this from day one I wonder what the public reaction would have been to this car. Obviously, this is completely impractical, but you have to recognize how good looking this vehicle actually is. Everything is aggressive and super functional with no stone left unturned. All of this goes into slicing through the wind and making one of the dullest cars into one of the most exciting. It really does look good.

Would You Buy It?

It makes you begin to wonder: with the onset of performance electric vehicles becoming more and more common, will people buy a Prius like this if the factory homologated it? I think the answer is actually yes based on enthusiast’s prior perception of this car as a bit dull. What would be more fun than trolling people on a race track in a Prius with aero and a 3.4L V8? Well, nothing really. Thanks for reading.
