Crossover

Cars and video games go together like peanut butter and jelly, and many car enthusiasts are also gamers. After all, gaming gives us the chance to drive just about anything virtually, which isn't always possible in real life. Then, every so often, a car from the fantasy world of gaming crosses over into the real world, which is the case with this 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo from the forthcoming game Cyberpunk 2077.

From the Future

The makers of the game, CD Project Red, actually got permission from Porsche to use the brand's name and a real 911 in the game, which means that this is no cheap copy. The design team was careful to retain the car's original lines but gave it some futuristic updates to match the game's setting, which takes place in the year 2077.

Modern Tech

They did add some seriously modern tech, however, including a lidar system and rear-view cameras instead of side mirrors, presumably giving it the capability to drive autonomously. But much of the rest of the car is nothing less than classic, air-cooled Porsche.

Getting into Character

CD Project Red says that the car will also sound exactly like its real-world counterpart in the game. It will be driven by Johnny Silverhand, a character played by Keanu Reeves. The game maker says that the word "Samurai" adorning the rear decklid is actually a nod to Silverhand's backstory, who led a band by the same name.

Two Legends

"Johnny’s a legend of the Cyberpunk universe. When thinking about what kind of car he’d be driving through the streets of Night City, we knew it would have to be one just as legendary as he is," said Paweł Mielniczuk, Art Director at CD Project Red. "Having Johnny’s story in mind, and being huge fans of Porsche ourselves, the answer could only be the classic 911 Turbo."

Tribute To a Tribute

The real-life version of this futuristic Porsche won't have all of its fancy theoretical tech, but it will share the same silver/red/white paint scheme that pays homage to the 911 RSR racer, which pays homage to the 1970 Le Mans-winning Porsche 917.

Sneak Preview

Those interested in seeing the Cyperpunk 2077 Porsche 911 can do so outside the Porsche Museum now through October 22, where it will be on display. As far as driving it in real life, however, we'll have to wait for the game's highly anticipated release on November 19.

Here is a look at the game itself in case you'd like to take a trip into the future.
