History

Not many people know about the marquee Lagonda. You may have heard the name but are probably unaware of its connection to Aston Martin.

In the early 1970s, Aston Martin was facing some financial troubles. At the time, Aston only made two-seater coupes and never really opened the idea of selling 2+2's until a man named William Towns designed the first Lagonda for the brand. It was a radical departure from the curvy and stylish lines of old Astons. This was truly a one-of-a-kind sedan.

When it debuted in 1976, it was immediately polarizing amongst car enthusiasts. The vehicle sadly won awards for being one of the ugliest cars ever made and so on. Despite having the first digital instrument cluster put in a car, people still scoffed at its other-worldly looks and sketchy driving experience.

Series 1-4

Over its 10+ year production period, the Lagonda underwent four iterations which were relatively similar. Some had differently styled interiors and exterior flourishes but all had the 5.8L V8 with either a manual or automatic transmission.

Series 1 debuted in 1974 and was basically an Aston Martin V8 and only seven were ever sold.

Series 2 is the classic version of the Lagonda that everyone remembers. The wedge-shaped, boxy, and digital dash 4-door was among the most expensive sedans ever made. Beating out Rolls Royces, Ferraris, and Bentleys of the time.

Series 3 was improved slightly by having cathode ray tube instruments and fuel injection. However, only 75 were ever made.

Series 4 was the biggest departure from the last model. It was facelifted, ditching the pop up headlights and added a new front end. From there, Aston Martin made a few one-offs including a shooting brake variant.

That's all ancient history compared to what's to come...

The New Model

This last year at Geneva, the latest Lagonda was unveiled and is set to hit the roads by 2021. It will be an all-electric luxury crossover. Seems like the car is supposed to be a hatchback with movable seats that can be flipped around to allow the occupants to face one another.

Word on the street, the EV will go about 400 miles on a single charge. Whether or not that is true, is still up to Aston Martin. What is for certain is that the car will have four-wheel drive and will a solid indication of cars to come in the near future.

Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, has stated how the car is aiming to be a more subtle alternative to the grandiose EVs that will be filling the markets in 2021. He said how the Lagonda will not make the owners look ostentatious but rather, normal.

Interior

As stated before, the seats will be movable in any direction but the space of the cabin will supposedly be very spacious due to its construction and high roofline in the rear. There will only be two seats in the back to maintain maximum space and opulence.

The interior will be constructed from an array of materials such as carbon fiber, ceramics, wool, and other less used fabrics such as silk and cashmere. Since the interior will be so comfortable and posh, the drivers can relax very easily. Even the driver will get to put his/her feet up because the car will have autonomous driving level four. All very impressive and very elegant.

Legacy

Many of you may ask what's all the hullabaloo about this Lagonda. The fact is, they made a limited number of cars during their peak and many didn't work very well. So it seems that this is another brand that will be confined to the history books but there's one caveat. The car industry works in weird ways. Some of the most phenomenal cars that were made in the past are overlooked for various reasons, and vice versa. The Lagonda is one of these cars that never was really that loved when it came out, was forgotten about, but is now making a comeback in the hearts of Aston/Lagonda fans. It isn't so much that it was a superior car for its time (because it really wasn't) but rather that it has maintained its desirability over all these years. The fact is, if you owned one and rolled up to a party in it, people would be curious, ask questions, and even be jealous of your special ride. The rest is history.
