Time: 5:19.546

Your eyes are not deceiving you; this car actually threw down a lap time almost 1 minute faster than Stefan Bellof in the insanely fast 956. Even today, the time Bellof set is staggering (6:11.130 for comparison purposes) and stands as a testament to how proficient Porsche is at raising the bar for everyone else. The onboard lap—which will be provided at the end—is one of the most incredible things you will ever see.

Corner Comparison

Let’s keep comparisons in the family and look at how fast this car is compared to something like a GT2 RS. Schwendenkreuz is a left-hander that is approached early in the lap at full throttle with an apex speed of about 127mph in the flagship version of the 911. The same corner in the 919 EVO is taken at 177mph. With both of these cars piloted by factory Porsche racing drivers, it gives you an idea of just how fast the Evolution is. But how?

Ridiculous Acceleration

The V4 packs vicious acceleration that makes the fastest road legal hypercars look like pedal bikes. Just after Aremburg corner, the experimental race car runs from 82mph to 186mph in just 5.97 seconds. Top speed on the longest straight was gear limited to approximately 220mph. Porsche shows enthusiasts the importance of tailoring your gearbox if you want to compete on the highest levels.

Ace in Every Aspect

Many people would say aerodynamics are what make this car capable of doing what it does, but it’s not that simple. This is an example of a car that has each component designed to work in tandem with the one next to it. Suspension geometry, aerodynamic centers of pressure, shock settings and driver feedback all play an equally important role in this lap time. This is what happens when decades of experience in engineers and drivers come together. You can’t buy it and you can’t do it by using brute power alone.

Michelin Pilot Special

Michelin works closely with Porsche to develop highly specialized tires for its road-going production models as well as its race cars. In the past decade, these tires have gone from leading the pack in road holding ability to leading the world in almost every category of racing. It would be more than a safe bet to wager Michelin had a strong hand in making this lap time possible with a secret compound that glues to the tarmac.

Timo Bernhard

Timo is a one of a kind driver whose career spans over 20 years. He is an ace behind the wheel who has been called on by Porsche many times in the past and has a multitude of disciplines under his belt. A shout out must be given to this driver who pushed the car to a height some people thought would never be accomplished.

Future 919

Porsche has been slightly reserved with the 919 in the wake of Audi’s sweep of Pikes Peak with the ID R. Electric cars also took home some impressive times at Goodwood this year which begs the question: Is 2019 the year of the 919? You can count on it. Until then, thanks for reading.
