Active Aero

One of the coolest innovations in production based cars has to be the recent introduction of active aerodynamics. Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Pagani are just a few of the notable manufacturers that are utilizing this to accomplish incredible feats. From self-deploying rear wings that act as giant air brakes to trick ducting that allows air to accelerate underneath the vehicle, supercars are doing some incredible things with how they manipulate air flow!

E-Differentials

Anyone who drives a great sports car will tell you how important a limited slip differential is to performance and this is where supercars are different. Cars like the McLaren P1 actually use an open diff at the rear which utilizes the braking system to act as a kind of check and balance system for wheel spin. This tech has its critics who favor mechanical versions, but with all that brain power at McLaren and the lap times the P1 has produced, the advantage is clear to see.

Choose your Drivetrain

The Rimac Concept One has done something that no one else has done with hybrid technology: the ability to change drivetrain layout on the fly. Yes, you can make this car front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive with the push of a button while you are in a corner. Fully rear-wheel-drive cars that can switch power all the way to the front wheels maybe be capable of saving epic slides that once would have required Formula 1 levels of skill to recover.

Layered Algorithms

Advancements in software and onboard computers have made a serious push to improve things that were once dismissed as low quality or cheap feeling. The best example of this is the new Bugatti Chiron which has 7 algorithms just to make the electronic steering feel right to the driver. Many people who review this car have praised its millimeter precise controls and intuitive road placement.

Fully Integrated Future

We are living in exciting times where supercars are breaking new ground and innovating in ways we once thought were impossible. Hybrid technology and a host of other cutting-edge ideas are raising the bar to allow a new era of speed. The good news is that engineers are using it to enhance our driving experience as opposed to hinder it.  As each of these individual components advances, designers and engineers will integrate them to create a better, faster future.
