New Territories for Brabus

Brabus has long been known for its radical interpretations of Mercedes-Benz models. One of the craziest of these is the Brabus G63 6x6 – a monstrous, military-inspired, 6-wheeled, 700-hp machine priced at over $1 million. All that changes this year as Brabus adds Porsche and Rolls Royce to its list of preferred project-car marques. The Brabus 820 is the company's first customized Porsche car, and it promises to serve more thrills than the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet (992) – the car upon which it is based.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) is the current holder of the "World Performance Car of the Year" award with good reason. It is one of the best sports cars on the road today because of the way it seamlessly combines supercar performance with everyday drivability. So, the folks at Brabus have attempted to make an already spectacular car even better. Have they succeeded? Let's find out. Brabus has a reputation for transforming average premium cars into fire-breathing performance machines, so its creations are worth a second look.

Worth noting is that while the stock Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet (992) starts at $228,900 before registration, handling, delivery, and options, the Brabus 820 starts at $405,533.

Signature BRABUS Power and Adrenaline

Arguably the biggest selling point for the Brabus 820 is its enhanced performance. It has a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine like the 992 Turbo S Cabriolet but adds newly developed turbochargers and a custom Brabus ECU tune. This engine makes an impressive 820 hp (hence its name),170 hp more than that of the stock engine. Its torque figures are also higher: 700 pound-feet (950 Nm), up from the stock engine's 590 pound-feet. All this power and torque is transferred to all four wheels via Porsche's proven eight-speed double-clutch transmission.

According to Brabus, the 820 can sprint to 62 mph / 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, so it is 3 seconds quicker to 62 mph than the stock 992 Turbo S Cabriolet. It gets better; while the stock car can only reach a top speed of 205 mph, the Brabus 820 can go up to 211 mph.

Awesome Acoustics

Not only is the Brabus 820 faster than the stock 992 Turbo S Cabriolet, but it also sounds better. Auto journalists have often criticized the 992 Turbo S for not having as much bark and snarl as a sports car of its caliber ought to have, but that is because of the latest European noise regulations for road-going vehicles. Apparently, the Brabus 820 is not bound to those regulations. It features an ultra-lightweight Inconel sports exhaust system that belts out glorious roars across the rev range.

"Black and Bold" Design Language

The Brabus 820 features Brabus' signature "Black and Bold" design language, which incorporates various design elements in a way that enhances both the styling and aerodynamic attributes of the car. It has exposed carbon fiber elements on its front bumper, chin spoiler, and matching winglets on the sides, making it look sportier and more distinct. It also features cool-looking carbon fiber side flaps in front of its rear wheels. At the back, the car boasts a large carbon fiber rear wing and an equally pronounced carbon fiber rear diffuser.

Monoblock Z Forged Wheels

The "Black and Bold" design language is also accentuated in the car's 10-spoke BRABUS Monoblock Z "Platinum Edition" forged wheels; 21 inches in the front and 22 inches in the rear. Each rim is forged from a single piece of metal. The wheels also have a center lock feature, a distinctive black finish that brings out the car's aggressive nature, and milled lettering on their edges.

Upgraded Suspension

The Brabus 820 sits 10 millimeters lower than the stock 992 Turbo S Cabriolet thanks to its height adjustable BRABUS sports suspension system, so it hugs the road a bit more and has sharper handling. This upgraded suspension can be adjusted by up to 25 millimeters, making it possible for you to configure the car to be driven on a variety of surfaces.

A Grand Brabus Interior

Brabus always goes all out when upgrading the interiors of its project cars, and the Brabus 820 is no exception. The car's handcrafted seats feature fine, crest-pattern-quilted black leather with red stitching and piping. The front seats also get the Brabus badge and a bespoke plaque signed by the expert who painstakingly crafted the car's cabin. The Brabus 820's dashboard, center console, doors, and footwells are also lined with fine leather and get the black and red treatment.

For many, the 992 Turbo S Cabriolet is more car than they would ever want. But if you are like me, you probably concur that the extra grunt and additional upgrades Brabus has added have made this car an outstanding driver's car.
