Want to Buy Ken Block’s Airborn Rally Car?

I loved the first Gymkhana movie to a degree that would worry clinical psychologists. His Crawford-built STI tore up El Toro Airforce Base, drifting into wood paneling with a freedom I had never seen, rattling hangars, decimating asphalt.

Despite being planned to a “T”, it was the free-est driving I had ever seen. Driving at that level of ferocity usually required ARMCO and guys with flags. This was an empty base. A playground. It was Grand Theft Auto in the real world.

This sparked an interest in Ken Block that One Direction would be jealous of, sending him on a path of fame and allowing him to pursue his dream of rally racing. Racing cars like this one.

As you know from the title of this post, this car is for sale. It’s not a bad buy either. Race cars can be smart investments, if the driver goes on to greatness. Mr Block is persistent so he might get there, but that’s a gamble.

Even if it doesn’t appreciate, this is a professional-level rally car, built to spec and ready to go. Building a car at this level won’t be cheap, and this skips all the cut knuckles.

But, think about what this car was used for. In case you forgot, the eBay seller put up pictures to remind you. This wasn’t only a race car, but also a spokesperson, a billboard, a show pony.

And boy was it shown. Ken is a smart man, which is why every Gymkhana video is really just a big ad for DC Shoes, and any other sticker on his car. Like this one, where he drove his car with a bunch of DC sponsored snowboarders.

Very cool idea. As a snowboarder, this video also won me over.

But if you’re going to buy a car, especially one for $125,000, do you want to buy one that was flung off a snow ramp, overshot a landing, and crunched its face?

The ad says it was professionally rebuilt, and I don’t doubt that, but we would be hesitant to buy a car that had been salvaged due to a deployed airbag from an errant soccer ball. This car fell out of the sky and smashed itself into to the snow. I bet the lug nuts were bruised.

I love this car, I really do, but I couldn’t buy it. What about you? Tell us what you think about the sale in the forum.>>
