I totally understand. When I picked up my 997 the sun roof did not work and the dealerships aid easy fix bring it back. While they were "easy fixing" it the mechanic cracked the headliner. The part had to be shipped from Germany and my car sat at the dealership for three weeks while they waited for the headliner. They gave me a loaner (Boxter) but I was actually depressed that month. Had bought the car , drove it maybe 30 miles and then taken away for almost a month buy a mechanic that was overzealous with the headliner. I hung in and have not had a problem since.

The autopsy results are in...

It took a little while for the dealer to get the car up on the lift (I should have mentioned in my initial post that the service was being done at my local dealer...not the dealer from whom I purchased the car) but once the car was examined, the technicians determined that the check engine light and rough ride were due to an ignition coil (for cylinder #5) which had become loose and caused the engine to misfire.

Whew...

Car is fixed, clean and ready for pick up.

I want to thank each of the posters who took the time to try to talk me off the ledge.

I think it goes without saying that this forum is a tremendous resource for all P-Car owners, but especially for noobs like myself. The fact that the more experienced owners take the time to answer the same questions over and over ("how much should I pay for this car" and "which options should I have"), are invaluable to those who are deciding to make the move. Your patience is admirable and unexpected.

I hope to be able to carry some of that water for this board once I have insight worth sharing.

Thanks again.

Stew

The good news is (in my experience) Porsche takes better care of its customers than any auto maker out there. They understand we drive these cars out of passion and your car will be perfect upon return. Enjoy it!

Having owned 3 different Porsches (Cayenne S, Boxster RS60, and now a 997), I can say the service I've had has been top notch. However, I've had to pay top dollar for the service, not like BMW, who has free sched maintenance. But to me, it's worth it.

Ignition coil ? Wow, you got off light !

I also recommend that when you get a chance, take a look under your car on the lift. There's a lot of engineering that goes into the underpinnings as well.
