IMS Failure...
yes, long time lurker, IMS failure... sigh...
2002 996 C4, one owner, I bought it in 2013 with 40K miles, immaculate, babied car, never out if there was a cloud in the sky...
Put 32K miles on in the last 3 years. And she was not babied in any way...
Heading to NASCAR @ Sears Point a few weeks ago. Stopped at redlight, engine died.
All of the visions of IMS failures I'd read about flashed back. Sure enough, went around back to push the car to the side of the road and she'd left a lovely oil slick all across the intersection.
$25k from Rector Porsche for a rebuild, either long block or short block, using all my own bits & ancillaries...
Obviously, not doing that!!
Looking for a donor car, a salvage, something I can later part out...that way, I can hopefully recoup costs of the repair/rebuild...
Question for you experts on here:
Can I use the 3.8L motor in it?
Are there any other Porsche motors I can use - besides the Chevy V8 (although that's a remote possibility) ?

You can get a 3.8 or 4.0 from here and be very happy.

If it left an oil slick, it probably wasn't the IMSB that failed. The IMSB failing is a purely internal thing and while some leaking could occur, it would not be described as an oil slick.
I'd bet on you having a hole in your case right next to a chain. Doesn't really change much though. Dead is dead
On a lighter note, it was probably sacrificing itself to save you from NASCAR
