I will try to answer this to the best of my ability, but pls do not take this as the gospel:

1. Does this system affect your warranty. My '12 TTS has a CPO which I don't want to mess with:

-If it is just a cat back (your keeping your factory cats, as Speedtech is modular John should have a bolt on from your factory cat back) exhaust I am pretty sure it would not effect your warranty

2. Along with 1., do you have to apply a tune once using this exhaust or can it be bolt and go?

-No tune is required if you are going with your factory cats and bolting on Speedtech's cat back system.

BUT if want more performance and want a complete system (from turbo back) I am figuring you can go with one of his Hi-FLOW cat's. I would do at least 200cell and higher to make sure there is no CEL lights. The flip side to that coin is less cells or no Cat would net you the best sound and most performance (hp/tq & spool) and you can put o2 sensor spacer to trick the ECU, but does not work all the time. If your going to do a tune then the less cells or not cat's I would do for sure as the tuner can deal with programming out the CEL lights, but the sound and performance is much enhanced!

3. If it is bolt and go, any error codes that need to be deactivated?

Of course, you could always swap the exhaust if you do need to take it in for potential warranty work, just to be on the safe side. I'm sure you could also appeal to make a case, also. Just depends on how much extra work you're willing to do in the case you're unlucky.

Having said this, I'd love to hear other people's experience/opinions on this as I sit on the fence on whether I want to rock the boat on my warranty with an exhaust, or not.

Maybe so for Porsche factory warranties, but from what I've read (again, without any personal experience) it's the other way around for 3rd party warranties like Fidelity (what most dealers use for CPO and other extended warranties).

The tune isn't something that's easily visible to an inspector, but an exhaust is. Even if you know your dealer well, I don't believe it's in their hands. When a claim is made above a certain amount, the 3rd party company will send someone to inspect the vehicle to either accept or not accept, with little to no control of the dealership.

Just my observation from reading other people's experience, and happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Many, but "not all" 3rd party warranty companies are notorious for looking for any reason to deny a claim. The aggressive ones are all about making money by denying as many claims as possible. I have personally had both liberal and self serving extended warranties over the years and have seen exactly how this works.

What most people do is retain the OEM exhaust and if there is any sort of engine or mechanical claim, they will return the car to stock prior to bringing it in. If it's something like a light, speedometer or air conditioning, then normally it is not necessary to involve an exhaust swap for warranty claims.

I feel it's better to be safe than sorry, so when my car was new and under factory warranty, I would replace the stock air box every time I went in for service just in case. It was easily done and provided peace of mind. The other thing I would suggest if you are that concerned is to talk to the service manager and mention that you are thinking of installing an aftermarket exhaust that retains the OEM cats (after cat system) and ask if it would affect your warranty in any way...then ask, what if I went with aftermarket cats would that make a difference....and there you will have your answers. A good service manager will know these issues and be able to advise you well. Just don't listen to them for mod suggestions - they normally do not recommend the best stuff

I have been in the retail automotive business a year short of a decade and 6 of those years are as a Finance and Insurance Manager. One of my core products we offer is the manufacturer Mechanical Breakdown Protection. Even though the one I offer is from the manufacturer, many other dealerships offer a 3rd party. The dealer on the other hand gets paid to do the warranty work from the manufacturer, so it is in the best interest for the dealer to make AS MANY claims "work", as much of services profits are from the manufacturer warranty claims.

Concerning "tunes" with newer cars, with manufacturer warranties (like CPO warranties) the vehicle even for an oil change is plugged into their diagnostics computer. I can speak for Audi,VW, Porsche, the computer then reads the ECU and sends that information FIRST to the manufacturer in GERMANY, THEN the information is rerouted back to the dealer. Then if there is a tune the manufacturer knows right away, even BEFORE the scanning dealer does and it flags that vehicle.

IE. My brother has a 12 S4 and has a manufacturer warranty on his vehicle up until 160 000km. The techs there that was trying to help him out with modding his car WITHOUT voiding his warranty let him do a full cat back and full intake, BUT TOLD HIM THAT A TUNE WOULD be instantly detected by the computer in Germany and there is no way around it & will void much (power-train) NOT all of his warranty!

Remember that these dealerships profits are heavily from warranty work (as it is the easiest sale as you do not need to "sell" each work order to the customer, but is guaranteed a sale and payment without haggling of how much they are going to get paid!) and each customer they can attract by reasonably looking after them that have a CPO manufacturer warranty, THAT CUSTOMER WOULD COME TO THEIR dealership for warranty work $$$. So if they have a exhaust and their NAVI goes and the dealer is getting a $3000 job (part incld), they will use common sense and get that claim done with the manufacturer. Nothing is unethical about it as the exhaust did not cause that NAVI to go and or even if the motor went it was not caused by an exhaust for example!! Now if the customer put on some home made cheap exhaust and it burned a hole through some wiring and shorted out something that the customer is trying to claim, a ethical dealer would not put that claim through. You have to look after the customer with common sense claims and look after the manufacturer by protecting them from false claim as they account for much of the services income.

Here's a couple of catless 3.0 X-Pipes we just did for two brothers - both own 997TT's. One brother opted for polished tips, while the other chose our brushed finish...

Unfortunately both have the potential to void warranty on the system of the car they affect.
i.e – check engine light on with cat efficiency codes, different back pressure causing oil leaks, etc.

he is safer to go with the mufflers only as there is less risk.

Less risk...what does that mean? I think their reply is BS. Plus I was asking about the muffler delete x-pipe only, not a new muffler.

Speak to Pfaff Tuning in Woodbridge which is shared in their Mclearen dealership. They are two buildings down from their Pfaff Porsche dealership that they work hand and foot with. Call them and ask them concerning your questions and you can also cross reference Pfaff Porsche.

Any dealer that would void a warranty claim over an exhaust, especially over just a cat back is a lazy and most likely a very low profit service dealership.

Give them a call as they mod a lot of Porsche's and also do package on their new and used Porsche's at their sister Porsche dealership.

Here is another 997.1TT X-Pipe w/ HJS cats getting packaged for shipment to a new owner. Below is the feedback we recently received via email from one of the last customers after installing our 3.0 X-Pipe w/tune:

Picked the car up this afternoon from my tuner. Had the clutch, cold air, tune, coilovers and the speed tech installed.

I cannot find the proper words to describe the violent and intoxicating sounds this exhaust is producing. It sounds 1000% better than I expected. I drove home about 20 miles from my tuner and I almost crashed a couple times from smiling to hard

John, your exhaust is certainly a masterpiece. I have been running catless for a while now and to be honest, I will take my own sweet time to install the HJS cats you just shipped in! Its popping flames at the 3rd to 4th gear shift when at WOT and full boost
