Pimp My Calipers

What's the best way of going about getting my calipers painted? I'd rather not have to send them in or take the whole car to the shop and have to wait. What I thought would be my weekend car is now my daily (as in all day) driver and I'm afraid I would go into convulsions if I had to be without it that long. Reckon a company out there would do an exchange or something like that?

I've seen links to paint kits from time to time floating around, and I know that they even sell "Porsche" caliper stickers somewhere. You would probably have to take them off the car at the very least, give them a good clean, and perhaps prep them somehow depending on the kit. May wind up being more trouble then it's worth.

Far as I know, removing them and having them powder coated is the only safe way to go.

It can be done yourself, but you are going to be without your car a couple of days anyway. The best is to get them powder coated, put the decals on, then clear coated. You're looking at 24-48 hours, but will look OEM.

I've seen some cool colors done, too. What I don't care for is a non-S getting red, or Yellow, as that seems to be like trying to pretend you have the bigger or the ceramic brakes. Poser stuff if you ask me.

However, I've seen bright green, orange, and even silver or gold look good depending on the color/ style of your car. Very unique on the right car.

Did mine with G2 red caliper paint on both my 05 Carrera and 05 Boxster. The kit comes with brake degreaser and hardener. Excellent results and has stood the test of time. Don't forget to get the "PORSCHE" stickers (find them on eBay) to complete the job !!!

I did them on my Boxster for under $50 bucks. Used the G2 brush on paint kit. Been over a year now, and they still look like new...

Best way is to remove the calipers and have them done.

However painting black calipers re or yellow to make them appear to be the bigger brake packages is totally pouser stuff in my eyes.

I sell the G2 Brake Caliper paint kits:

I have used www.xenonmods.com for the stickers. Their service is rotton, but the stickers are good.

Thanks everyone for the input. It appears painting them myself may be an option although I'm pretty nervous about me with a paintbrush around my girl.

Mike, you mention in your excellent how-to article that the clear coat you used was a Duplicolor product but I didn't see the name of the actual paint kit. Was it also Duplicolor?

Oh, the clearcoat I used was just a can of Duplicolor high temp clear that I got from Autozone. It comes in a spray can. You just lightly apply 2 thin coats over the PORSCHE decal area after you've applied the decals. Do not spray too many coats of the clearcoat...just enough to cover, because if you do make it too thick, the clear will crack over time. The paint kit I purchased was the G2 Caliper paint kit. Duplicolor makes one too, but I just happened to use the G2 one.

Btw, my name's Rich, but Mike actually hosted the article I wrote on his website.

A lot of properly masking tape, some news paper, a blanket, some high temp spray paint/clearcoat, basic knowledge of painting, 1 afternoon.

That's what it takes.

I did this on my 996 last year... weekend job. Kept up really well... also tracked the car after it, so my calipers got really hot.

Follow this link for a step-by-step guide... painting your calipers for dummies:

Why so harsh with those C2 owners who want red calipers because they look better than black? You'll never see anyone on here called a poser for putting GT3 bumpers on their C2/C2S. Same standard should apply to "upgrading" caliper color IMO. The term "poser" really should be reserved for those who rebadge the car as something it isn't.
