How is this private-party? Does Shift buy and sell the car?
Shift does not buy or sell cars; all cars listed through Shift are still owned by the seller. Shift simply does the legwork to help the seller sell their car. We appraise the value of the car, arrange for pickup and a 200-point mechanical inspection, professionally photograph the car, list the vehicle (on Shift's site and a variety of listing platforms), coordinate test drives with potential buyers, and store the vehicles in a secured storage facility.
Test drives? What’s the deal with that?
If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, we would be happy to bring out the vehicle to you for a free, no-obligation test drive. Please visit the listing link for the vehicle to book the test drive on our website. Alternatively, send us an inquiry by PM or email and we'll be happy to set it up.
I want more information about the car, what can you provide me?
Please PM or email us if you have any additional questions about the car. We'd be happy to provide you with our condition report which will detail what our inspection found, tire and brake condition, and also any repairs we have performed on the car. In addition, we’ll provide you with a CarFax and Autocheck vehicle history report at no cost to you.
Can you guys ship the car?
Yes! Please reach out to us directly by PM or email and we can coordinate shipping the vehicle. The buyer will be responsible for all shipping fees, but we can definitely help arrange it.

If you see a car you are interested in, please comment on the thread, PM, or email us directly, and we will coordinate from that point on. We can provide you with more information on the vehicle and if you’d like to move forward, we can discuss payment options such as financing, cashier’s check, or wire transfer, as well as arrange shipping. If you are in the state of California, we also take care of all DMV processes such as transferring the vehicle’s ownership to you (no need to go to the DMV!).
Out-of-State Buyers
For out-of-state buyers, the process is the same as California buyers but we will not be able to take care of the DMV process for you. We will file the Release of Liability (ROL) on behalf of the seller and then overnight the title to you after we receive payment for the vehicle.
How is buying from Shift any different from a private-party sale?
With Shift, you can rest-assured you are getting a quality vehicle that has been thoroughly inspected by our independent, certified mechanics. We note any defects or blemishes on the vehicle through pictures as well as in our condition report so you know exactly what you are getting–no surprises.
Do you guys offer financing?
Yes! If interested in financing, please reach out to us directly through PM or email and we can send over the application information for our lending partners.
Do you take trade-ins?
Yes! Please send us a message through PM or email with the year, make, and model of your car along with license plate #, mileage, and pictures if possible. We can then provide you with a guaranteed value for your car, that will be put towards the purchase of the vehicle you are interested in. In addition, after your vehicle sells, you will also receive an additional bonus–contingent on what we found during our inspection.
