Porsche Finishes 500,000th Vehicle at Leipzig

Porsche started building cars at their Leipzig factory ten years ago with the production of the Cayenne. Today, they’ve rolled their 500,000th vehicle off the assembly line and into the world. Clearly, their gamble on a luxurious SUV has payed off.

Although they’ve also been building the Panamera sport there since 2009, the 500,000th car was a special Cayenne built for the Leipzig fire brigade. Porsche’s president said the vehicle was a token of appreciation to the lord mayor of Leipzig for their aid in making Porsche successful. It won’t end at the Panamera though. Come 2013 Porsche will begin construction of their new sedan, the Macan, at Leipzig as well.

It’s difficult to understate the importance of these vehicles to Porsche’s brand. While none of them get our hearts pumping like the 911 does, they do allow Porsche to remain flush with cash. Which means they can continue to make the sports cars we all know and love.
