2020 McLaren GT: Redefining the ‘GT’ Name

By -

Can a mid-engine 600+ HP 4.0L twin-turbo V8 McLaren really retain the lofty luxury title of grand tourer?

When most people hear the name “McLaren” the first things they usually associate with the brand is speed and luxury. By definition, GT stands for grand tourer, which implies that the car is designed with speed and extended drives as its front-facing ideology. In order to achieve comfort over long distances, luxury and quality is key to make the driving experience as refined and smooth as possible. At the same time, speed must be achieved by giving the car power and performance-based modifications.

Traditionally, most GT cars have been front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupes. However, McLaren isn’t a brand built on traditionality, but rather, innovation and breaking standards by any means. For this, they built their latest vehicle: the McLaren GT. This coupe features non-other than a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 resting in a carbon-fiber tub. Doesn’t that sound very McLaren? Thanks to the good folks over at Carfection, we are able to see just exactly what the British brand will be bringing to the table with their latest luxury product.

To start, let’s get back to that twin-turbo V8 powering this new McLaren. It makes a cool 611 HP, has a 3.2 second 0-to-60 time, and the obviously required 200+ MPH top speed. You might think, wow that sounds like an awful lot of performance capability for a car whose supposed purpose enjoying lovely drives in the European countryside. However, it wouldn’t be McLaren without a little bit more than a flair.

So how exactly does this touring McLaren differentiate itself from the supercars within the company’s lineup? The big difference is the setup of the car. The steering is weighty and responsive, but not lazer-direct and twitchy. The brakes are firm and effective, but require some heavy pedal pressure to get them to stop. The car has traded the recipe of all-out no compromises performance for that of a comfortable, yet playful driving experience. Things like McLaren’s new predictive suspension help this setup become reality. Essentially, the ECU takes in feedback from the way the driver is driving and the corners he has already gone through to make an assumption of how the drive will continue.

This allows the car to always feel within control and balance, but still visceral enough to enjoy throwing it in a hairpin or two. With this new model, McLaren is really expanding what is possible for the brand and their unique lineup of vehicles.
