4 Super-Cool Cars at Barrett-Jackson Auction Northeast

Docket includes classic Porsche Turbo and a superlight IMSA GTP car.
As is usually the case, the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction on June 21 and June 24 heavily features classic American iron. Muscle cars reign supreme at most auctions in the States. However, we’ve found some more exotic machinery at Barrett-Jackson that might appeal to 6SpeedOnline readers. From a 1980s IMSA prototype to a monster Viper GTS, there’s a touch of everything here.

1979 Porsche 930 Turbo
Factory optioned with a limited-slip differential, this 930 Turbo has undergone a fairly extensive restoration. That included overhauling of most major systems on the car and a complete rebuild of the 3.0-liter Turbo engine. These cars represented one of the few shining stars of a dark time for automakers in the United States. With a top speed north of 160 miles per hour and 0 to 60 times around 5.0 seconds, these were real supercars for the late ‘70s.

2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
Legendary race car builders McLaren have tuned street cars for some time, but their joint effort with Mercedes Benz produced just their second-ever road car. With a monstrous 617 horsepower supercharged 5.5-liter V8, this joint venture could eat up roadway like nobody’s business. The SLR carries true styling panache and gullwing doors. It also represented the pinnacle of Mercedes’ model lineup for the better part of a decade.

1988 Lamborghini Countach Quatrrovalvole
Italian car collector Joe Nastasi specially ordered this Super Fly Yellow Countach from the factory and Nastasi even talked Lamborghini chief test driver Valentino Balboni into signing the sun visor. The eye-catching yellow represents the best of 1980s poster cars. Since it comes from Nastasi’s collection, one could bet safely that it’s been extraordinarily well-tended.

1984 IMSA GTP Lights Denali-Mazda Prototype
IMSA GTP Lights from the 1980s don’t command the instant jaw-dropping ability of the bigger Porsche 962s and Ford Mustang Probes. However, the lithe machines—typically powered by Mazda Wankel rotary engines—were devastatingly capable road racers. This Denali Speedcar enjoyed success in its two-year IMSA Lights career with two wins at Lime Rock Park and six total podiums in 10 races. It won’t bring 962 money, but since it comes with a trailer and looks ready to race in vintage events, we’ll guess it brings a healthy five-figure bid.
