Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Injects Italian Flair into British Beauty
The relationship between Italian designer Zagato and Aston Martin spans decades. This is their latest collaboration.
Ask any automotive enthusiast on the planet who makes the world’s most beautiful cars, and you’ll likely get one of two answers. Either Aston Martin or some Italian automaker, likely Ferrari. And quite honestly, it’s hard to argue with either. But to settle the debate, why not just combine the two? Why not commission an Italian designer to rethink the stunning lines of a proper British road car? Well, that’s exactly what’s happened here with the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato.
Turns out, Italian designer Ugo Zagato and Aston Martin’s David Brown have enjoyed a decades-old relationship. So it isn’t really all that strange to learn that Aston enlisted Zagato to reimagine its DB4GT racer way back in 1960. And then, the V8 Vantage in 1986 and DB7 in 2002. But the latest collaborative effort between the two seemingly different companies is this – the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato. And of the 99 built, this particular one is headed to RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction on August 24.
Chassis number 48 of 99 is finished in Shell Grey and has less than 100 delivery miles showing on the odometer. The carbon fiber body panels are familiar yet unique, composed of large one-piece panels. The most obvious departure from your typical Vantage is the wraparound glass and double-bubble roof panel, a nod to Zagato’s signature blend of racing and aeronautics.
This particular Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato is a rare bird, indeed. But it’s also one of only 15 examples built for the U.S. With an auction estimate of $600,000 to $800,000, it also doesn’t present much (if any) of a markup over its $775,000 sticker price. Which means that one lucky person will be getting not only a rare opportunity. But a unique piece of automotive design history as well.
