Converting a 2007 Porsche Boxster S into a Lykan Hypersport may not be easy, but it’s loads of fun to watch.

YouTuber, and frequent VINWiki guest, Casey Putsch, has been hard a work transforming a 2007 Porsche Boxster S into the Lykan Hypersport kit car that was used for the Fast and the Furious Live arena tour. He started by cutting off all of the body panels. Then literally chopping the remains in half to extend the wheelbase to match the Lykan’s longer footprint. And, while it’s never fun to see a Porsche sacrificed, the build is thus far both super-fun and being done for a noble cause.

For those unaware, Putsch runs the Genius Garage student mentorship program, which is “a racing team made up of a select group of the brightest and most driven college students. The students come from academic backgrounds ranging from engineering to fine art, music, business, and journalism. The racing team provides a crucial “vehicle” for the student’s experiences, as few professional worlds are as demanding and competitive as racing.” In other words, Putsch’s build, which is sponsored by 6Speed Online vendor, Avalon King, checks off several enthusiasts boxes, from tinkering and building fast toys to movie car history to helping next-generation auto enthusiasts gain valuable and professional experience.

Welding & Alignment

In part four, Putsch and his student assistant, Tyler, explain why the Boxster was the perfect candidate for the Lykan build and then begin measuring and mocking up the revised vehicle wheelbase. Their goal is to make sure everything’s square. And then it’s time to weld, which includes a fair bit of guidance for the audience as well as Putsch’s student. (Spoiler alert: Tyler does a “wonderful job.”)

Body Fitment

In part five, Genius Garage student Cameron (aka One Hand Cam) joins Putsch to help give viewers a tour of what was completed off camera. Welding is now done, the A-pillars are gone, and the former-Boxster is ready to start body mockup. Another student, “Witness Protection Lois,” arrives to help move panels around. And with the body mocked up, Putsch discusses future plans and explains why coilover suspensions are so amazing.

Soul Performance Exhaust

In the sixth chapter, Tyler returns to first help with battery relocation and extending shifter and emergency brake cables. And finally, it’s time for Putsch and crew to install a Soul Performance Exhaust. The only bummer is that we don’t get to hear the engine rev up in this video, but the first start is just down below.

It Lives!

In the seventh and most recent installment, Putsch and his college student team show off the new exhaust and give us a tour of the build’s further progress. They’re working on airflow inlets and finishing up the battery location. Next, they finally get the car started, not only to hear the new exhaust, but also to bleed air out of the cooling system. Lastly, they’re already thinking ahead to future engineering challenges (like figuring out Lykan’s crazy door-opening angles).
