Of all the cars I have ever driven in my career, the number of machines I would own is desperately short. There is the Porsche 911, an NC-generation Miata powered by an LS3 V8, the Fiat 500 Abarth, and finally, the younger sibling to the 911, the Porsche Cayman S. Now while that is quite an odd list, they all share one trait; these are pure driver’s cars.

Of them all though, the one I love and loathe the most simultaneously is the Cayman. It has the most potential for speed and capability of almost any car I have ever sat in. It feels so fast and nimble, but it also feels neutered by Porsche for fear of stepping onto the toes of the big-daddy 911.

That all stops now with the introduction of the Cayman GT4. This is a machine that is a race-ready monster with less weight, more power and a tighter suspension setup than any Cayman before it. It is in a sense a mid-engine version of the 911 GT3. It has GT3 suspension, GT3 seats, and it’s all powered by the engine from a 911 Carrera S. In a word, its sounds perfect.

If you don’t believe just how a good a car like this can be, just watch this video of Chris Harris beating on the thing around Portimao. It is less like watching a review video and more like watching a man struggle with the fact that he is falling in love with a car. With the sun high on the horizon, the metallic blue paint flickering through the shot at a lighting pace and the orchestral wail of that flat-six as the soundtrack, this is nothing short of automotive ecstasy in video format.

If you stick around for long enough, you get to see the greasy bits under the car and you get a nice explanation of what makes the GT4 so much better than a standard Cayman model. Just do yourself a favor, stop whatever you are doing, and spend the next 12 minutes and 42 seconds entranced with what may be one of the greatest cars to ever roll out of Stuttgart.
