Another Record Sale? 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Hitting Auction Block

The British auction house Bonhams has announced that one of the most desirable Ferrari’s on the planet will be sold at their Quail Lodge auction. The auction will be held August 15 on the Monterey Peninsula in California.

This pinnacle of vintage Ferrari and Pininfarina goodness will be sold with no reserve.

This particular example of Italian automotive perfection is chassis number 3851 GT, one of only 33 produced in 1962. The car managed a second place finish in the 1962 Tour de France as a factory effort. In another race, the car was crashed—killing driver Henri Oreiller— and rebuilt by Ferrari later that year. When Ferrari was done campaigning the car, they sold it into private hands where it ran in hill climbs and vintage races. The car has been owned by the same family for the past 49 years.

This car has the potential of demanding the highest amount ever paid for any car at auction. Over the last few years classic Ferraris have been bringing in astronomically high figures, with a 1957 TR 250 and a 1965 250 GTO both bringing in over $25 million each. So for this ultra-rare example, the sky’s the limit.
