E46 M3 Kit Car Drift Car? Yes. Please.

The word “kit car” carries a stigma with it. Cobras are the only replicas accepted by the public and that consistently do the originals justice. But if you’ve ever seen a fake Ferrari, Lamborghini, or the like, your brain becomes a demolition derby. Confusion, disbelief, laughter, and sadness all playing the role of the cars. The things people think pass as “Ferrari-like” is surprising. Panel gaps, bad proportions, extra windows or vents, Corvette tail lights, what the hell were they thinking?

That’s why referring to this HGK Motorsport drift car as “a kit car” doesn’t seem fair. This isn’t a cheap collage of metal and fiberglass trying to be something expensive. This is a racing chassis, with 50/50 weight distribution, engineered with more attention than the Burj Khalifa, that just happens to fit under a fiberglass body that resembles an E46 BMW.

This car is engineered specifically for drifting. And as anything purpose-built for a race track, it’s expensive. This is no DIY bargain. You will spend a lot more on this than you would on a used E46 and an LS motor. But, you can’t remove the rear clamshell of a stock E46 and go sideways, can you?

It weighs 2,000lbs. The weight sits as low as Mark Wahlberg avoiding sniper fire. There’s not a single thing on it that doesn’t serve a purpose.

“Why?” you ask? Well, if you want to compete at the highest level of any sport, you need the right gear (Except swimming. After the speedo, that’s really all on you.) Top competitors in Formula D and D1 spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their cars. Some of that goes to parts, but a lot of it goes to engineers testing, adjusting, perfecting. The HGK car is ready. All that R&D is done. It’s like Vermont Sports Car supplying rally teams with chassis and cars.  HGK built what they believe is the perfect drift car. You buy the car, supply the driver, and you’re ready.
