Modern BMW CS Render Looks Great

I tend to hate the cyclical nature of fashion. The whole “retro” thing bothers me. Don’t bring back neon clothes, they look stupid. Hipsters touting the benefit of single-speed bicycles is evolution in reverse.

Do it with a car and I become a flip-flopping hypocrite. The new Camaro is gigantic and impossible to see out of, but it looks cool. The original Camaro is a gorgeous car with huge appeal, so I understand the business case for bringing it back, but a part of me will always hope for the progression of new ideas and turn away from capitalizing on guaranteed nostalgic appeal.

But, if you take the right car, one that is a bit off the beaten path, and do it right, a re-birth is a wonderful thing. The new Lancia Stratos is a perfect example, as is this exquisitely updated rendering of BMW’s ultra-smooth CS.

The BMW CS (specifically the 2800, 3.0CS, and 3.0CSL) are some of my favorite coupe designs of the past. The 70s was a dark time for American car design, most of which is best forgotten, but these are priceless. They had a subtle lean to them, like when a lion takes those slow steps as it calculates how to kill something. Smooth, but with an edge, a reformed gangster.

And David’s rendering does it perfect justice, while making it look right at home on a 2014 highway. The word that comes to mind is “handsome.” It’s presence is solid and confident. The hood and trunk have a gentle bend that was a signature of the original. The new BMWs look cool, but they’re very aggressive, the Affliction shirt of corner office holders. This is a BMW for the Audi A5 owner. A bit more regal and refined. BMW, hire this man. (As for you folks, go to David’s site to see more pictures, and his early ultra-cool sketches.)
