Every Generation of the 911 RSR Graces the Race Track!

By -

Over 50 years of dedication and heritage have gone into the Porsche RSR program, and we get to experience every model.

There is nothing deeper ingrained into Porsche‘s history than racing. The German brand has been fighting alongside fierce competition for decades and don’t plan to give up any time soon (or ever for that matter). Henry Ford one said something along the lines of “motor racing started after the second car was built”. We think that Porsche couldn’t agree more. The most dedicated of racing vehicles the company ever built also held a similar title: RSR. RSR (Renn Sport Rennwagen) literally translated from German means racing sport racing car. These were the vehicles that the company built not as a consumer products, but strictly for racing use.

These competition vehicles have never been street-legal and never will be, their home is the race track and the race track only. Over decades of time, Porsche has a released a variety of RSR models to tear up the race track, with the first model starting in 1973. Thanks to a video by Belgian-Motorsport on YouTube, we get to compare all of these models going neck and neck at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps. While we won’t be covering all the models, we will be highlighting some of our favorites through the years.

1. 1973 911 Carrera RSR 3.0

The first of these race-only Porsches was the 1973 911 Carrera RSR. While it may not look like the craziest thing imaginable from the time period, this particular car has aged well and has a certain grace. Considering the fact that it made well over 300 HP and weighed less than 2,000 pounds back in the 70’s, this was a lot of car to handle, even for the pros. It was notoriously tail-happy even with the widened arches and increased track width.

2. 1993 964 Carrera RSR 3.8

A couple of generations later, the 964 RSR was released. Interestingly, this car retained similar power figures in the 300 HP range like the first RSR, but weighed over 500 pound more! As you can see, the increased complexity of technology and safety regulations can make a big difference in a couple of years. This car might have one of the best sounding flat-sixes of the era.

3. 2017 991.2 RSR 4.0

Nearly 20 years later, a lot can change as you might imagine. While the familiar 911 body line remains in this car, compared to the first-generation this RSR is almost unrecognizable. Now sporting a 4.0L making 510 HP and weighing around 2,740 pounds, this RSR a completely different beast. Comparing the size of this car to the 1973 model makes that one look like a toy car. We think the first generation of the 991.2 RSR is perhaps one of the best sounding GT3-spec cars ever.
