The Last Ferrari California was Bad. This Turbo One (allegedly) Isn’t.

2014 ferrari california turbo video

The new Ferrari California makes 200 more foot pounds of torque than its predecessor. 200. That’s like adding another engine to the old one. This is why turbos are good.

People might complain about Ferrari turning to turbos to make more power, safe fuel, and lower emissions. Yes, what idiots they are. The new California’s engine is smaller by half a liter, uses less fuel, but makes way more torque. Morons I tell ya.

I hope my sarcasm is palpable through the screen, because I support Ferrari’s decision 100%.  A lot of that is due to the last California being one of my least-favorite cars ever (looks were the main source of my hatred, and an ample one), but it’s also because turbocharged Ferrari sound so. damn. cool. I love their small-bore V8s and 12 as much as anyone, but turbos don’t hurt that. When a turbo is properly mated to a small V8, it’s like the first time someone added chocolate sauce to ice cream, and no one ever complained about that.

I haven’t ridden in the California yet, but I rode in a turbo 348, and wow. The whistles led the march to my ears and the shriek finished things. It’s a symphony of sophisticated power. Your brain knows what these soldiers of power can do, and now it knows they’re working together.

Combine that with a much better looking car, and you have the proper SL-competitor that Ferrari always wanted to make, and that we knew they could.
