McLaren 720S and Lamborghini Huracan Duel at the Drags

By -

Do the laws of physics still dictate that the lighter, more powerful car is also the fastest? In this case, yes.

In the fast-changing world of supercar dominance, there are only a couple of certainties. One, prices and power will inevitably rise. Two, lap times and elapsed times will inevitably fall. Cars like the Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 720S continue to push the proverbial envelope, and they also represent two of the newer offerings on the market. But there’s just one burning question that we must always ask – which one is faster?

To find out, DragTimes lined up a Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4 against a McLaren 720S at Palm Beach International Raceway for a little drag racing. On paper, this might very well seem like a bit of an unfair race. The Huracan comes to the party with a “paltry” 602 HP, while the mighty new 720S packs a 710 HP punch. But as we already know, power ain’t everything.

Of course, the driver plays into things on a grand scale. The McLaren is rear-wheel drive, while the Lambo has the initial traction advantage of all-wheel drive. But the 720S has a pretty substantial 372 pound advantage, much of which can be attributed to that lack of extra drivetrain parts. So might we have a race, after all? Maybe?

The showdown takes place from a stop with launch control turned on in both cars. The Lambo jumps out to an early lead, which then quickly evaporates as the more powerful McLaren takes over. After that, it’s all gravy as the lighter, substantially more powerful 720S walks away from the Lambo to claim victory.

So maybe, just maybe, the laws of physics still apply. But while that might still be up for debate, we know one thing for sure – the McLaren 720S is a drag racing monster!
