Dream Crusher : The McLaren F1 can be a Maintenance Nightmare

By -

When you win the lottery, you can finally buy your dream car. What if you find out that owning it is a complete nightmare?

We all have the one car that we fell in love with as a kid. The one we had a poster of on our wall. It was a inspiration, a goal, and a sweet dream. We would own one someday and be driving with our dream girl or guy next to us. This car is stunning, fast, and timelessly cool. If you were into cars in the early 1990s, then you know the McLaren F1.

The F1 was a completely insane car of the era. It was the most expensive car in the world at the time, selling for $818,000 new. The McLaren F1 also held the record for the world’s fastest car at 240 mph through most of the 90s. So, the performance and speed are sexy, but nothing at the time was more beautiful and purposeful on the road. The amazing winged doors and the cool center driving position. The extensive use of carbon fiber was unlike anything ever sold. To top is all off the engine bay has gold foil all over, to reduce the temperatures. This was only used by NASA at the time and was just nuts to see in a road car. So, with the bank account to support such a purchase you buy your dream, a McLaren F1.

You shop for the right car. Finding a clean example, that has just finished a $250,000 service at the factory in England. Your dream has come true and the F1 is finally yours. McLaren is nice enough to offer the first service for free. They fly out a mechanic and check over the car. Then you learn the horror hidden in your dream. The man from McLaren has some bad news. Your dream needs another $250,000 in maintenance at the factory. This amazing machine is a race car and parts don’t just wear out, they time out. Race engines are like airplanes, they measure them in time not distance. Now this all being said, if you have the means, you should you buy the cars of your dreams.
