The Polaris Slingshot is One Funked Up American Track Day Car (Video)
Cars like the Ariel Atom, the KTM X-Bow, Morgan 3-Wheeler, BAC Mono, and Caterham Seven have been the track toys mostly for those in the UK, or who could afford to get them here in the States where they have a sizable mark-up. Now however, the U.S. has its very own track toy to launch throughout the world, the Polaris Slingshot.
The two seat, three-wheeled track car is Polaris’ shot at Morgan and Campanga for the trike market. The car/motorcycle uses a 2.4L GM derived EcoTec four cylinder engine putting down 173 hp and 166lb-ft of torque. With the relatively minuscule amount of weight, 1700 lbs, the Slingshot is quick.
Think about it this way, the FR-S is around 2600 lbs with roughly the same amount of horsepower, which gets it up and going to 60 in around six seconds. The Slingshot is 1000 lbs lighter. It’s going to be ridiculously quick.
What’s even better is that rather than cost you an arm and a leg like all those other track day toys I mentioned above, the Slingshot will only set you back $20 grand. That’s magnitudes less money than any of the other direct competitors cost.
The Slingshot offers a great way to start going to track days, or autocross events without voiding your warranty or having to cut up your everyday car. It also offers loads of fun, and styling down by a crazed barber with a straight razor, and I can’t wait to try one out!
