Purist BMW Aficinados Celebrate to i8 Spyder

1Official word hasn’t been released on the BMW website yet on the convertible i8 Spyder production though the rumors are true, BMW will build the i8 Spyder. Information has been flourishing all over the web from blogs and magazines about the newest member of the Bavarian family. BMW throughout history has been known to make famous convertibles from the antique roadsters of the 1960’s, through the 1990’s with the Henrik Fisker designed BMW Z3 featured in the the “Golden Eye” Bond movie to this scrumptiously smooth i8 Hybrid Spyder supercar of today.

The word online and by CarBuzz , BMW with continue the i8 Spyder with the same hybrid powertrain fitted with a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder hybrid unit delivering 357 HP. The main alterations are to the carbon fiber body where it is stated by CarBuzz the i8 Spyder will have removable carbon fiber roof panels instead of a power retractable hard or soft top system.

This is a great weight-saving technique to build a convertible without all the pounds of power retractable roof componentry. I bet there will be space to store the panels in the car but for even more weight reduction you can leave the panels out of the i8 at home. The body is so light it probably won’t be noticeably lighter. I think the i8 Spyder might be heavier with the addition structural reinforcements for countering the weakened roofless body.

Overall I know BMW makes exciting cars and convertibles are so pure to the driving spirit out in the wind making this such a purist BMW. True to form, their brand heritage and vision for the future. Interesting to look at, look out of and talk about. A perfect match of fashion and function is at the heart of BMW and this magnificent machine.

Do you think BMW should have built a carbon fiber power retractable hardtop instead? Have you owned vehicles like the Viper or the Corvette with manual convertibles? Do you find it a nuisance to keep removing and installing the top?
