Long before the Porsche Cayenne, or the Lamborghini Urus teased us with their insane motors and ridiculous price tags. Lamborghini gave us the first performance SUV. The Cheetah 4×4.

The project started out as a prototype that was meant to be sold to the U.S. Army of all people. It was built to be a capable off road vehicle that could transport troops and weapons into battle zones. In the end, the U.S. military went with the HumVee and axed the Lamborghini project. That however, left Lamborghini with a bunch of Cheetah 4×4 prototypes laying around.

So they wouldn’t lose all that development money the company spent, Lamborghini re-skinned the cars, gave them an interior, and showed off the concept at the Brussels Auto Show as the LM002 concept. It wasn’t a big hit, but the company did sell a few of the cars throughout the world.

It’s been a long time since Lamborghini offered an SUV, but with the Urus coming up potentially soon, the original is starting to climb in value. And if you’re in the market for the original performance SUV, there’s a 1989 LM002 heading to auction this January in Arizona.

It’s being offered at no reserve, but we expect it to go for around a couple hundred grand. Here’s the listing if you’re interested.
