Porsche 911E with its Type 905/13 Sportomatic gearbox, is a rare classic that belongs in a car collection.

It’s not uncommon for a classic Porsche 911 to have are rich and often eccentric heritage. A perfectly preserved example always grabs our attention, especially if it’s shrouded in mystery. An immaculate unrestored 1968 Porsche 911E was recently sold at Silverston Auctions’ RAF Museum London Season Opener.

Interestingly, this example is that the specialist auction house did not reveal the selling price that the car fetched. This 1968 Porsche 911E 2.0 is quite rare because it has the Type 905/13 Sportomatic gearbox. In 1967, Porsche started offering this gearbox as an optional extra for the 911 range.

The Sportomatic transmission is essentially a clutchless manual gearbox. As a result, the driver has to engage a micro-switch to change gears by pulling a lever. This activates a pneumatic valve that operates the clutch song, which again engages when the driver releases the lever. The transmission in this Porsche 911E is the original unit.

Regardless of the mysterious price tag, there’s no doubting that the new owner of this exquisite 911E got the better end of the deal.

This1968 Porsche 911E is a number matching example and has a Porsche certificate of authenticity. The car was sold with just 52,283 miles on the odometer, backed by a complete MOT history. This 1968 Porsche 911E is a right-hand drive car, which interestingly retains most of its original equipment. The car rides on a set of beautiful Fuchs wheels and flaunts a beautiful Ivory White paint job.

The car also gets its original book pack, Bilstein jack, and full toolkit. In its factory tune, the 2-liter powerplant of the 911E could churn out 140 HP of maximum power. The engine of this 911E comes with Bosch mechanical fuel injection as standard. Black/Pepita leatherette material covers most of the surfaces inside the cabin of this classic sports car.

Furthermore, the previous owners of the car did an excellent job of preserving it. This 911 east still has its original Motorola radio and headrests. Since it is a B-series model, this Porsche 911E gets a longer wheelbase and a magnesium engine case. Porsche offered this version with a pair of small batteries to improve the weight distribution.
