Porsche 911 Caerrar 3.0 RSR IROC Pablo Escobar Anderson Fittipaldi

One of only 15 built, this 1974 Porsche 911 RSR IROC was raced by F1 legend Anderson Fittipaldi and drug lord Pablo Escobar.

An old Porsche with a crazy heritage is no new concept. There are endless air-cooled wonders that have a historic lineup of owners and stories to tell. However, this classic 911 blends its remarkable rarity with an equally noteworthy lineup of past owners and drivers. Now, you have an opportunity to add your name to that list. That is if you can afford to.

The car was recently offered for sale on the auction website Collecting Cars. However, its auction has since ended, and the car went unsold. We figure this is likely due to the auction not hitting a seller reserve price.

Iroc 911 RSR 3.0 Racing Car for Auction

Unique History for a Unique Car

Roger Penske originally purchased the car for use in the 1974  International Race of Champions (IROC) season. The driver was iconic Formula One champion, Anderson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi even drove the car into pole position during his first IROC race.

After its stint with Penske, this gorgeous Porsche 911 race car made its way to John Tunstall, who went on to race the car in both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Sebring 12 Hour.

As if competing in some of the most iconic races in the world isn’t enough, the story takes an even crazier turn. Tunstall sold the car to drug lord Pablo Escobar, who had a notable taste for fast and expensive cars. However, even under Escobar’s ownership, it was no show queen. Instead, he took to the track, racing the 911 in Columbia.  Additionally, it had 935 bodywork during Escobar’s ownership.

However, the car eventually returned to the US in the early 1990s.

Not Your Average Porsche 911

The Carrera RSR 3.0 IROC features a 3.0-liter “High Butterfly” flat-six racing engine. Power is sent to the ground via a five-speed manual transaxle assembly.

Only 15 of these cars were ever produced, making its rarity quite attractive to collectors in its own right. The ownership and driver history are just a bit of icing on the cake, really.

Obviously, this car hasn’t always been as perfect as it appears here. That comes naturally to a car that sees time on a race track. However, according to the auction listing, this Porsche 911 underwent a full restoration in 2007. Over the next three years, it was meticulously restored, finally being finished in 2010. Naturally, that leaves the paintwork and body panels in show-ready condition.

The restoration comes at the hands of RennGruppe Motorsports in North Carolina.

Inside, the interior components are in good shape with normal aging and patina from its use.

How Much Does This Racing Legend Cost?

Given the auction’s end with no sale, it’s truly hard to say what this car costs. But, according to Road and Track’s recent report, the bids were rapidly approaching $1 Million. Which, in our mind, seems about right. Evidently, though, encroaching on the seven-figure mark doesn’t quite cut it for the seller.

Ultimately, this car is virtually impossible to put a price on from our end. Likely the only person who has a real number in mind is the seller. Unfortunately, it seems that number was not met. That being said, it is quite a spectacle to see regardless of who owns it.
