A red Porsche 944 and The Questionable Garage

An abandoned 1986 Porsche 944 was just days away from being the perfect Christmas gift.

The Questionable Garage dabbles in the sort of project most hobbyists and builders would reject outright. It’s the kind of thing that prompts viewers to, well, question some things. It’s in the name, after all. It’s not uncommon for Jared Pink to turn his attention to neglected Nissans, classic Toyota Supras, and even the odd Porsche 944.

Such is the case with Pink’s Christmas mission: return an abandoned 1986 Porsche 944 to its glory in time for a Yuletide giveaway. Specifically, Pink earmarked the 944 as a gift for a close friend’s wife. However, The Questionable Garage had a timeline; they had to button up the 944 in just eight days.

Pink started with a cranking, somewhat rough, non-turbo 944 that he describes as a “questionable Christmas gift.” Apropos, in addition to the overall questionable nature, the team found a urine bottle and a police scanner in the decades-old Porsche. Still, the canvas was a manual 944 with the turbo side skirts. Not too shabby.

Legendary Timing

Despite the workload, The Questionable Garage got the front-engine Porsche ready for a Christmas reveal.

After a deep clean and an inventory, the self-proclaimed “not a Porsche expert” set to work assessing the Porsche. For starters, he replaced the power steering pump, fuel pump, fuel filter, and hoses.

Complete Restoration

What’s more, Pink drained the fluids, repaired the electric fans, installed a new battery, and added fuel. After all that, the 944 refused to start. Still, Pink’s persistence brought life back into the “happy-sounding” inline-four. Further, after a tune-up and meticulous detailing, the Porsche looked better than it had in years.
