Rumor: Porsche Building Off Road Carrera Crossover?

Word around the internet is that Porsche is developing a new concept 911. This is interesting for two reasons. The first is that Porsche never does concepts for the 911.  Even weirder is that it’ll be an high-riding crossover.

In recent years the 911 has been relegated to life as a track focused sports car, but that wasn’t always the case. Back when the 911 was just a fancy, air-cooled, Volkswagen, Porsche did take it racing off-road. In fact, the 911 earned the name Carrera after winning the Carrera-Panamerica rally back in the fifties. There was also the Porsche 911 SC Safari of the late seventies. Hell, even the 959, Porsche’s first super car, was originally destined for group B rally racing. Porsche is not afraid of the dirt.

Still, this news of a concept is a surprise mainly because Porsche has two real off-road offerings in the Cayenne and the Macan. Certainly they don’t have the classic Carrera silhouette, but they’re capable all the same. Car and Driver say the concept should go on display at the Beijing autoshow this April.
