I recently paid a visit to the Period Correct Atelier – an automotive culture focused apparel/clothing shop located in Costa Mesa, CA. Along with all sorts of apparel, books, and novelties, the store also has a couple of cars on display. One of these machines was none other than a 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport, one particular car I have yet to see in person before this. As the title mentions, the 924 you see here is extremely rare. Just how rare you ask? How does 1-of-15 sound to you?

924 GTS

After producing 400 924 GT models in 1980, in order to comply with homologation regulations for Group 4 – Porsche introduced the 924 GTS. Equipped with a plethora of performance upgrades over the GT, the GTS trim included fixed headlights; lightweight body panels including the doors and  hood; thinner front windshield glass and plexiglass for the side windows (with sliders) and rear hatch. For added weight savings, the steel trailing arms were swapped out for aluminum units. The rear suspension was further modified with the removal of the torsion bar in place of a coil/shock setup.

924 GTS Clubsport

Out of the 59 GTS models made, only 15 were Clubsport editions which included a bolted-in roll cage; 935 race seats with Autoflug 4-point harnesses; limited-slip differential; 911 Turbo brakes, and a 120-litre (31.7 U.S. gallon) fuel tank. All 59 made GTS versions only came in red according to my research, so I assume this particular GTS Clubsport was painted white (please correct me if I’m wrong. The Fuchs wheels also added a delicious touch to the racy aesthetics.

Powertrain

Under the lightweight hood of the Clubsport is the same 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine powering the standard GTS with the exception of a larger front-mounted intercooler. Power is rated at 280 horsepower, which is 35 more than the standard GTS. This brings the Clubsport’s 0-100 KPH (62MPH) time to 5.2 seconds and a top speed of just over 160 MPH.

Being such a rare car, high asking prices for these things shouldn’t come to a surprise. I remember seeing one for sale on the Internet around $300,000 USD (Yes I know, NUTS right?!). Oh how would I love to have this unicorn in my garage. If you have any additional information about the 924 GTS and want to share the knowledge with other 6SpeedOnline members, please do leave a comment.
