Top Gear’s Final 7 Cars for Performance Car of the Year 2017

The only thing harder than whittling down this field from 13 to just 7 is deciding which one to drive first

Top Gear’s Speed Week 2017 includes the hotly anticipated competition for Performance Car of the Year 2017. Just look at that lineup. Every competitor has the reputation to get them to the track but only back-to-back laps could sort out which ought to move on.

The contenders include the Volkswagen Up GTI, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, Honda Civic Type R, Mercedes-AMG E63-S, Porsche 911 GT3, McLaren 720S, Lexus LC500, BMW M4 CS, Audi R8 Plus Spyder, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford GT, Mercedes-AMG GT R, and the Audi RS3.

Chris Harris, now a presenter on BBC’s Top Gear, is the lucky guy who gets to choose what moves on. He also got to drive all these cars on the track. An obvious choice was the Ford GT, which is literally a racecar with the stickers pulled off and the power turned up. Harris said, “It has to come. It’s spectacularly clever.”

Perhaps one of Harris’s more surprising picks is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. He gave the Lambo quite the backhanded compliment, saying, “It’s utterly tasteless… but the driving experience. What an engine!” In light of his tiff with Lamborghini over a little article on Jalopnik criticizing the shift at Lamborghini from performance machines to style statements. He says that he thinks it’s gaudy, but to have the Huracan stand out in this crowd? Lamborghini certainly did something right.

Check out the video to see which five cars make it to the next stage of the competition. The competition takes place in Scotland, with lots of entertaining on-track footage from Knockhill circuit. Top Gear will take the seven finalists on a tour of the Scottish Highlands, which is sure to yield some fantastic visuals.
