McLaren 720S Acceleration Leaves YouTuber ‘Dumbfounded’

By -

McLaren 720S can and will cure cravings of even the most die-hard adrenaline junkie.

Since McLaren has officially put a name on each of the 500 Senna hypercars set to be produced, you’ll have to buy a McLaren 720S if you want the top car from Woking. However, it’s not as if you have to ‘settle’ much. This 710 horsepower hypercar offers performance that is tough to eclipse.

McLaren’s use of extensive technology is no surprise to anyone, and car reviewer Matt Maran dives into some of the details. Ties to their Formula 1 team carry over into the road cars, and things like traction control are present not just to keep the car safe, but to make the car faster. “It even has variable drift control to allow the vehicle to step out to what ever degree you specify,” Maran notes. This, combined with the active rear wing which raises to a stall position during braking are technologies more at home on the track than the street.

Power belongs on a track as well, as Maran actually has a tough time finding a bit of road long enough to actually let the McLaren stretch its legs. Sprints to 60 miles per hour are accomplished in less than 3 seconds, and Maran even describes the acceleration as being able to turn his stomach. Maran notes that he’s driven hundreds of cars, but nothing at all like the ferocity of this one. “This whole video is going to be nothing but my reactions! Me just being dumbfounded by this thing!”

Driving the car at normal pace exposes some of the more ferocious aspects of the car. Wide tires combined with a body only concerned with downforce and light weight mean its a noisy place to spend time. But luckily the road noise is supplemented by the twin-turbo V8 just behind the seats. It’s more of a howl than a traditional V8 noise, and the turbo wastegates just add another layer to the sensation of speed.

Still, Maran describes it as being easy to drive without all of the punishing characteristics of old hypercars. You can actually see out of it, for instance. But really, it’s the performance that is the main takeaway here. Maran says, “I don’t know how you could get out of this and wish there was a little more to it.”

Considering McLaren might not come out with a successor to the Senna any time soon, the 720S is the top dog right now. Could you name a new hypercar you want more?
