At what point does remapping with performance software become a necessity? Does a ECU performance flash provide improvements at the pure stock level or with just a few bolt-on mods (intake/exhaust)?

The only time remapping becomes a necessity, rather than a want, is if you make modifications to the engine, its intake and exhaust, that require remapping to obtain the full benefits of the mods.
