Hey guys Im looking to purchase a 99 to 2002 porsche 911 6 speed non turbo. Are there any known issues with these cars to look out for and whats a good price for one. I see them anywhere from 17000 to 22000?

I'm laughing a bit inside because no one on here has responded. The reason I'm guessing is that the issues of the 996 are so well documented and easy to find by doing a search on this site, many other Porsche sites or just plain googling it. I would never suggest anyone buy a 996. Guaranteed to depreciate like a rock. Just google "Porsche RMS and Porsche IMS". You can find cars where the RMS seal has been replaced and yeah, the cars are fun, as some owners will tell you, but it's undeniable that the 996 is the quickest depreciating Porsche of all time. You could get a car that never will have the RMS or IMS issues, but it's always a possibility. RMS and IMS problems aren't guaranteed but the depreciation is. Do your research and make a decision you feel comfortable with.

They can be great cars as long as some of the issues are resolved. The 996 section will have a lot more too offer though and there are plenty of good ones out there to be had, just make sure you get a PPI done before purchasing though. Most of the depreciation has already occurred I personally don't see them going to much lower then they already are but, I have been known to be wrong. Let us know what you end up doing.

I just bought a 2001 C4 with 55K on the clock, for $22500 The first thing I did was to have the engine pulled the IMS replaced, rear seals, cam seals, AOS, and leak tested, found 1 cly out of spec. It was a stuck oil ring, also replaced the CV boots and hoses. it cost 4K but now I can kick it and not worry. So it cost 26500 but I think it is worth it. Look at others in the 26K range but not the car I got with all the options I wanted. Some were newer but more wear was shown,

I think the 996 is a favorite of Internet trollers who like to beat up a car just because it has a few minor issues like the rare engine failure and a propensity to leak oil from the RMS and it doesn't have the "character" of the air cooled cars. I was one of those who got whacked with the horrible depreciation, but I also owned the car for 3 years and had basically no problems with it (two minor issues). And I bought it used.

One reason they depreciate so much is because there are so many of them. There are so many of them because they were very popular, and a great seller for Porsche.

They depreciate a lot. Not a 911 that true Porsche fans are fond of. Not traditional looking with the "Q" headlights and on the early 996 models, the mkl's, those engines kinda suck. Those 3.4 liter engines blow. Yeah they've got 300hp and I'm sure they're fun but the reliability is ****.

I'd suggest you require people to post what cars they owned and what the issues were. I owned two NA 996's and a Turbo 996. Bought each new; owned the Turbo for 11 years (2001, sold it last fall). Had no major work on the car outside warranty. My 01 Cab had 15k miles on it when I sold it, owned my 02 Cab for 8 years. Had no major work outside warranty work. Loved them.

In terms of your question the newer the better. The 02 has a long list of significant updates from the 99-01 cars. I'd take an 02+ if you can find one. I don't remember the entire list but it's things like stiffer chassis, more torque, bose audio, glovebox, flat black switchgear (as opposed to gloss black in early cars), and more.

Good luck.
