Classic car value?
Classic car value?
I'm looking at a 78 911SC that's basically bone stock. Any and all repairs have only been done when the car broke, so everything is still pretty much as it was coming out of the factory. I have all the service records from the first and second owners and none of the major components have been touched.
I found information that fully restored 911SCs are going for around $20k. This one has 117k on the clock, needs a transmission rebuild, I'm presuming an engine rebuild, suspension rebuild, and complete interior overhaul. I have read that a transmission and engine rebuild would be in the $4-6k range each, interior parts are about $2k, the paint needs to be redone (huge "touch-up" on the driver's door in addition to cracks all over the driver's side) ~$2k, and these are just the things I could identify during a quick test drive.
Based on the information above, I'm inclined to think that $2500 would be a good price for it. Would that be a fair price?

I would think $2500 would be a great price. Is there any rust ? Any pictures you could show us ? If you can drive it I would get a PPI done somewhere and get an estimate oh what it would cost and go from there.
I created this timeline of the service records that he has with the vehicle.

I have only seen it in person once and didn't notice any rust offhand. I know to look around the rear wheels, is there another area I need to focus on?
Since these pictures were taken, the belts for the air pump and AC compressor have been added.

I wanted to call out that I need to ensure that the price is not just good for me, but good for the seller as well. The seller is a colleague and I'm not interested in getting the car at a great for me, bad for him kind of price.
If it ends up that $8k is a fair price for everyone, it is what it is.

I would just check the floor boards and underneath the car for the trouble spots. Has the car been in Texas it's whole life ? I think your best solution is to get a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) done and then determine a value that is going to be fair for you and the seller. I hope you get it, looks like like a fun little car too drive and work on.
Ok, thanks for the information.
I also hope I can get it, I drove it once and it was really fun. I can't wait to take it to an autocross so I can learn how to drive a rear-engine car.
